Charting a way forward for Eritrea
For more than four decades one figure has towered over Eritrean life. Isaias Afwerki has ruled Eritrea with a rod of iron, just as he once led the liberation movement that successfully liberated the country in 1991. Previously an enormous asset, he has become the chief obstacle to progress. But his rule, once all but unchallenged, is now questioned from all quarters.

Easter and betrayal
By Aesop 04/29/19 - Betrayal envelops the Easter story. The New Testament narrates how Judas Iscariot and St. Peter betrayed Christ before the crucifixion. It also describes how St. Thomas asked Jesus to show his nail marks after the resurrection. Jesus foretold some of his disciples will forsake him. Times were hard during the Last Supper. Enemies targeted Jesus. He was ripe for betrayal. Betrayal emerges when times are difficult. It is, like the common cold, a function of the environment.

Bridging the Gap in the Nile Waters Dispute
What's new? Ethiopia is moving ahead with construction of Africa's largest dam, despite Egypt's worry that it will reduce the downstream flow of the Nile, the source of around 90 per cent of its freshwater supply. It is crucial that the parties resolve their dispute before the dam begins operating.

DERELICTION OF DUTY: A tale of a heist, a squander, and how to realign.
Daniel Tesfaye 4-27-19 - Back in the volatile days of the Oromo Protests and Amhara resistance, the TPLF had a Eureka moment and decided to call a spade a spade, embarking in an arduous task of reshuffling its deck, big time. Operatives like Dr. Debretsion and Getachew Reda decided to turn their backs to the trappings of glistening Addis and trekked to Mekelle...

The symbolism of the vengeful mistreatment and cowardly acts being meted on Bereket Simon and Kassa Kebede .
Hatsani Daniel 4-27-19 - The illegal and wicked treatment being meted on Tinqishu and Bereket are now the latest symbols for the underlying target of the hate campaign. Both Tinqishu and Bereket are symbols of the bravery, dedication of the people. They stayed and continued the fight to victory when thousands of their peers abandoned the struggle and went in different ...

The Rwandan miracle
A quarter of a century after the terrible genocide of 1994, Rwanda is turning a new page in its history. Following a long period of national unification and reconciliation, it is investing in economic growth and focusing on new technologies, with the hope of becoming an ICT hub in Africa.Twenty-five years ago, the bloodiest chapter in the contemporary history of Africa was written in Rwanda...

Why the border between Eritrea and Ethiopia closed so soon so unexpected to officials?
Hatsani Daniel 4-27-19 - I saw on TV an attempt to explain the border closure from the Ethiopian government. It ended up showing clearly that Isayas decided this in person. As far as he is concerned the purpose of the guayla and Hindu dance was only against the two bordering kilils. Mission accomplished. From here on Isayas has no expected benefits, but only sure fire problems. ...

The puzzling chess moves inside EPRDF - The fate of team Lema and team Gedu
Kaleb, April 26, 2019 - Since 2016 Ethiopian politics has been the politics of chaos, the political disorder has reached its limit, the last 12 months have been a stress-test for Abiy admin and EPRDF coalition. It is difficult to understand what's happening inside the political elites of EPRDF. I have the belief that EPRDF itself doesn’t seem to be clear on what’s happening to the country and to the front itself. One of the difficulties is loosening democratic centralism inside EPRDF, each front is playing ...

Permaculture brings prosperity to Ethiopia's rural areas
Over 10 million people in the Horn of Africa region are at risk of food insecurity. But on a small scale, some people are working to reverse the trend. That's what's happening in a village in the Tigray region, about 800 kilometres from Ethiopia's capital. Since the end of the 1990s, food production there has been multiplied by ten and farmer incomes by twenty. Today, this village serves as an example. Our team reports.

Many Ethiopians thought the US and its hired agents in the country advising the Abiy government would help Meaza Ashenafi to reform the justice system, at least, to make it more like the US justice system! As you all know the US justice system is well respected and honored. Judges are very independent and any court decision is respected come rain or shine! To many Ethiopians that wish has vanished to thin air and many are thinking if there will be a second operation to free prisoners! [Zeru Hagos - April 2019]

How Did Ethiopia Get from There to Here: Questioning the Current Narrative (Part 1)
Elias Dawit 4-22-19 - In this article I look at the current political narrative that is being written about today's political transition-the key actors and the underlying assumptions., In Part 2, I look at the role of one of the key actors and explore the reasons behind his prominence-former head of the National Intelligence security services Getachew Assefa. It is the winners who write the narrative that describes the "before" and "after" of political change. Let's take the case of contemporary Ethiopia. Today's political narrative describes a country celebrating the rise of...

Revealing Barara-the long-lost African medieval city
In the mid-1400s, a scholar-monk name Fra Mauro, was commissioned to create a new world map based upon the most recent research and travel accounts from explorers across the world. Through compiling notes, collecting maps, and interviewing travelers, ambassadors, and seafarers, empty spaces on his map blossomed into mysterious African cities or mountains tied to legends...

The Tyranny of Food Habits: A Key Challenge to Food Security in Tigray
Dr. Yohannes Aberra Ayele 4-22-19 - There are a few relevant sayings pertaining to the might of habit on human behavior for which change is long overdue፡ "Old habits die hard"; "Habit is second nature", etc. The most enduring of all human habits are food habit. It evolves through time, in particular, natural, social, and economic contexts, reinforced and protected by a number of tenacious cultural values.

Can Ethiopia Afford to Hold Elections in 2020?
Teshome Beyene Berhe 4-22-19 The biggest challenge for Dr Abiy and his team to tackle is the fact that they have to constantly ensure legitimacy of ruling the country. The intriguing question as to where that legitimacy comes from going forward? Is it from EPRDF's 'election' of 2015 to the assemblies? Is it from the popular protest of 2017 and 2018, which directly or indirectly caused ...

After years of repression, Ethiopia's media is free - and fanning the flames of ethnic tension
Ethiopia has been a rare bright spot of increased rights and democracy on a continent more known for leaders overstaying their mandates. Its progress in media freedom- there are no longer any imprisoned journalists - has been so dramatic that it was chosen to host World Press Freedom Day on May 2. The changes have also prompted new conflicts and unearthed long-buried grievances, often revolving around land and ethnicity. And to many, a newly polarized press is making things worse.
(Washington Post should ask and tell us also why the former government changed course when it comes to press freedom? Eskinder became a known journalist before he was jailed right! He was writing and publishing anything he wanted before he crossed the red line and sent to jail! The same red line the Post has included in its title! What is the Post trying to tell us with this story? That we have not matured as a society? That the Abiy government is democratic but we are not ready for democracy? Why can't the post investigate what democracy means to Ethiopians? How can democracy work in Ethiopia when the government is airing a documentary on alleged torture by "Tigrigna Tenagari"(Tigrigna Speakers). Who is fanning the ethnic tension?)

Is A 25 Years Old Disgrace in the making in Ethiopia?
By TeKa 4/21/2019 - It has been now exactly 25 years since this shameful human episode happened in Rwanda that began in April 7, 1994. 25 years around this time, the Tutsis were being massacred, Call me pessimist, I do not care, but I smell something like that coming home, unless we change course.

An Attack on Tigray's Unity: "Awrajawinet" and Tigray's Internal Threats
By Yene Gasha 4-20-19 - Opposition leaders in Tigray and some members of the elite are determined to spread the scourge of "awrajawinet" across Tigray. It’s evident that behind this seemingly innocent movement lurks a dark and dangerous agenda which seeks to bring about disunity and discord across Tigray. Make no mistake, this is a campaign orchestrated from outside and aims to target Dr. Debretsion's relatively new government in particular and the Tigray’s elite in general.
