THOUSANDS WILL GATHER IN SEATTLE FOR A MULTI-CITY NATIONAL RALLY AGAINST THE ONGOING GENOCIDAL WAR ON TIGRAY, ETHIOPIA

The Ethiopian government has been executing a nine-month-long genocidal war in Tigray that has left 91% of the population in need of emergency humanitarian aid. The United Nations stated this is the worst famine the world has seen for a decade. Multiple Tigrayan and ally organizations within the United States will congregate to collectively condemn the long list of atrocities being committed against innocent civilians.

SEATTLE, WA—Members and allies of the Tigrayan diaspora community across the United States will carry out a multi-city rally against the genocidal war on Tigray in Seattle on August 20th, 12PM at Westlake Park. Protesters will demand that the United States and the broader international community take action against the civilian atrocities, sexual violence, war crimes, ethnic cleansing, and looming famine that have plagued the Ethiopian state of Tigray.

On November 4, 2020, the unelected Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and his administration declared war on the Tigray region and enforced a telecommunications and media blackout. The subsequent nine months of war have resulted in hundreds of thousands of civilians being killed, 5.2 million people (91% of the population) in need of emergency food aid, 2.2 million people internally displaced, 70,000+ refugees fleeing to Sudan, 50,000+ victims of sexual violence and cultural and religious sites being destroyed. According to Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, Ethiopian officials and allied militia fighters from the Amhara region are leading a systematic campaign of ethnic cleansing in Tigray.

Over the course of the protest, thousands will gather to raise awareness and demand that the United States and the international community act immediately to ensure the immediate withdrawal of Eritrean troops and Amhara regional security forces, immediate cessation of hostilities, and an UN-led investigation into the war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide on Tigray’s population.
