Complete with high-end machines optimized for software training, interactive projectors, trainers of the highest caliber, and custom co-working spaces and learning environments, Gebeya has become one of the premier training centers in Ethiopia with minimal advertising and only 6 months marketplace penetration. The “Gebeya Professional” model currently offers training in 5 different tracks, which are; mobile application engineering, UI/UX, frontend web application engineering, backend web application engineering, and Dev-Ops. Gebeya training is unique from most other institutions in a sense that it provides practical instruction, with a very hands-on approach. Trainees are expected to build and complete software products by the time they graduate as to assess the skills they have acquired throughout their training experience. In addition to that, selected trainees are given the opportunity to work on paid projects during their training with oversight from senior software architects. By the time a trainee graduates, he or she will already have worked towards building a digital portfolio in which to showcase their completed products. This project based vetting was created with a similar purpose as that of a “residency” with respect to the medical field. As the main purpose of the company is to encourage and develop African IT talent, Gebeya prides itself in providing potential trainees that qualify with partial and full scholarship options. As of today, Gebeya has awarded more than $40,000 dollars in scholarship funding. Early into 2017, Gebeya is concurrently running multiple courses for the first two batches of trainees with plans to start the third batch of trainees in April 2017. Upon completion, graduates will have the option to join the “Gebeya Developer Platform” which will serve as a bridge to clients insuring quality control while also guaranteeing competitive pay rates for its developers. Gebeya’s overall vision is to train and produce Top African IT talent and to subsequently provide job opportunities by bridging the gap between potential clients and Gebeya talent. While it is already utilizing its capacity to provide an online IT services workplace for the global business market, the “Gebeya Developer Platform” is set to formally launch in Kenya early 2017. This platform will increase the visibility of African IT talent, provide competitive wages to African developers, and also reduce IT operational costs to clients by sourcing local developers.
