EU Delegation Wows the People of Tigray for Best Practices in Environmental Rehabilitation

(Mekelle, 10/18/11)- High Level EU delegation headed by Mrs. Connle Hedegard , European Commissioner for Climate Action , attended the first conference on Climate Change and Development for Africa (CCDA-1) and were hosted by president of Tigray Region on October 18 , 2011. Her Excellency accompanied by Mr Michael Christense , Member of Cabinet and Mr. Jurgen Lefevere, DGCLIMA European Commission ,visited different areas in Tigray Region.

The delegation visited three main sites in Kilete Awlallo wereda after attending a briefing by President of Tigray , Ato Abay Woldu about the efforts of the people of Tigray and the achievements gained so far in environmental rehabilitation.

The first field visit was Laelay Agula, 60 kilometers from Mekelle, an EU supported food facility and safety net and integrated watershed activity. The micro dam for irrigation area was inaugurated by Mrs. Connle Hedegard European Commissioner for Climate Action. The results gained in this locality has enabled Mrs. Connle Hedegard to observe the fruitful results of the people's efforts on soil and water conservation. The integrated benefits obtained from the environmental care includes beekeeping activity, river diversion for irrigation , improvement on livelihood activities at households level!

The second visit was a 20 kilometers gravel road and walk travel to Gulu Chafe Watershed Development. This was the most exciting cluster area which surprised the delegation according to the delegates. In this watershed development cluster, there are catchments treatment, small water harvesting structures trenches and percolation ponds, channels and area enclosure.

The third visit was a Tead Emil watershed development cluster which includes catchments treatment, gully reclamation , water harvesting check dam, ponds linked to livestock and potable water supply. .

Mrs. Connle Hedegard, said the best practices of the people are weighing more than the talks in environmental plans. EU will enhance and extend its support to the people with such best practices regarding supply of resources.

The delegation also expressed their satisfaction with the effective efforts made by the local people to eradicate poverty.
