PM Meles confers with Bill Gates
Addis Ababa, March 28, 2012 (Addis Ababa) - Prime Minister Meles Zenawi here on Wednesday held talks with a delegation led by Bill Gates founder and co-chair of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Prime Minister Meles on the occasion expressed belief that the principles of the Foundation will contribute share to enhance development of the agriculture and health sectors in Ethiopia.
He said the Foundation's best practices gained through long years of working in South East Asian countries combined with its principles will contribute to the achievement of the Growth and Transformation Plan.
Gates on his part said the community health service which Ethiopia provides through the 34,000 health extension workers is exemplary.
He said the Foundation will continue to assist Ethiopia in the health and agriculture sectors.
He said the Foundation will support the efforts of Ethiopia in the prevention and control of malaria, pneumonia and diarrhea, among others.
It will also continue to assist the activities of the government of Ethiopia to boost agriculture productivity and ensure food security.
Bill Gates arrived in Addis Ababa later last Monday, for a two days visit.
Bill Gates is here for the first time to discuss with government officials and stakeholders on the foundationís activities and the Health and Agriculture sectors in the country.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation or the Gates Foundation is the largest transparently operated private foundation in the world, founded by Bill and Melinda Gates.
The primary aims of the foundation are, globally, to enhance healthcare and reduce extreme poverty, and in America, to expand educational opportunities and access to information technology.
