The one man regime in Eritrea is known to do the unexpected to survive another day. In the aftermath of its huge defeat by the Ethiopian defense forces it signed on the dotted line not to station its forces within 25 KM from the border area as Ethiopia demanded. Today after belittling the African Union over the years, it has decided to respect it by appointing an Ambassador! The question is why? What does this mean to the Eritrean Opposition in Addis Ababa? Who else could benefit by Eritrea’s government right hand man presence in Addis? Egypt? who….have your say!
Why all this hupla over one guy coming to Addis to become an envoy of his country? If Ethiopia hosts AU and all AU members have the right to sent their envoys to Addis, surely, Girma as representative of his nation, is entitled to be there. Do not spin things out of proportions.
Also what is wrong with normalising relation with Eritrea? Do we have to kill each other over some barren land called Badme? Or there is more than meets the eyes issues here?

I really do not understand why this is big issue. The fact that Ethiopia used the void to mobilize Africa against Eritrea it is necessary for Eritrea to have its ambassador around. As to why Girma Asmerom is in Addis I do not think the Eritrean government wanted to have him in there. It is only because the AU is based in Addis Ababa. Even though the USA does not have diplomatic relations with Venezuela, Iran and Cuba all the countries have representatives to the UN in New York. The presence of Girma Asmerom in Addis Ababa falls into that category. So let’s not make a big thing out of nothing. Girma Asmerom worked as Ambassador to the EU and the US. I am sure he will do his job professionally.
What is the point of raisning the issue here? Isn’t Eritrea a memebr of the African Union? If Mele’s government is willing to have him back and not see him as security risk, then why AIGA editor finding it uncomfrtable? In the past , I read same non-sense topic being raised ofr discussion-the topic was Eritrea’s new found wealth in Gold mineralization and the possible threat to Ethiopia? Would a resources rich Eritrea be more safe to have it as neighbor than a poor and instable one?

The latest change of heart of HDGF to resume its participation in the regional and global institutions it was famous of insulting and belittling is self evident to show the compounded predicament it is in. To fulfill this dirty game, no one is better qualified to represent HGDF as its African Union Representative than the old hand Girma Asmerom.
Aite Girma Asmerom is one of the staunchest HGDF policy designers, leaders and executors. Similar to Saddam Husain’s Tariq Aziz, he has served Esaias Afewerqi’s thuggish regime as ardent propaganda face to the west. Girma has repeatedly defended the voodoo regional politics of the despot, its cruel actions against the people of Eritrea, and repeatedly made concocted accusations against Ethiopia. Aite Girma is one of the HGDF leaders who had livid in Ethiopia for many years with thorough knowledge of our society. He had represented HGDF in Addis Ababa and used his diplomatic privileges to actively recruit, organize, orchestrate and lead illegal mafia like businesses and subversive political activities until the beginning of the last war. While working as the main mouth piece of the PFDJ cult, he has made consorted efforts to tarnish the good image of Ethiopia, its government and people.
Knowing the near past crude behavior of HGDF, people should not be surprised of this assignment because HGDF knows Girma is the best face it has not only to save its political power but also to polish new image and try to repair the irreparable relation of the two countries.
Similar to any administration, the Ethiopian government would have rejected his nomination had it was not fully prepared to neutralize any possible dangers Girma posses to our country. The people of Ethiopia remember the multifaceted sabotages HGDF did using its “tool in crime” acolytes and networks. By any standard Girma Asmerom is an outstanding and respected leader than any of EPRDF officials. He represents his country at his best, he could even be the next UN’s or World’s bank leader but he choose to work for his nation… The last 5 yrs his been working as Eritrean representiv in the Eu and now Au in addis. It is good news to hear that the Asmera regim send its representative to the African Union head office right now which was vecant its seat for years not because of Ethiopia or the African Union but because of the government of President Esayas. Tobegin with, Ethiopia never had any impact that caused Abassador Girma to leave his seat years ago. Ethiopia is doing the right thing. If an African country chooses to have an ambassador to AU at Addis then by the charter of AU Ethiopia has to be abided.I hope Eritrea has learned a lesson and do not repeat the same or another mistake. Ethiopia has to be vigilant and watch Eritrea’s and its supporters activities. The reason why Eritrea is choosing an Ambassador to AU now and not before is of its prsident’s behavior. The Ambassador has no say except to say YES SIR to his boss and the president does what ever he wants to do at any time. President Esayas Afwerki is needed for a while until Eritrean chauvinism is minimized to Zero.
Eritrea, is within its right, to choose anyone to represent it at the African Union and Addis doesn’t have a say , whatsoever, as it is bound by the Headquarter’s agreement with the African Union. I think more troubling is the latest wire reports alluding to the Ogaden Liberation Front conference which was held in Asmara. Moreover, The Eritreans have renegaded from abiding by the Doha Agreements which envisioned ceding illegally occupied Djibouti territories and are arming and abating numerous insurrection some of whom are financed from a radius of 10 miles of the State Department ( I will think the US should take the Sanctions seriously as they have become the Law of the Land since taking effect a year ago). I wouldn’t be surprised if arms shipments are getting their way into Eritrea for the Sanctions aren’t being enforced as they should. Ethiopia and your web site should highlight these facts and lobby the relevant powers to force the Regime in Asmara to refrain from breach of International Law. The mining bonanza in Eritrea will only mean that the Regime will snub the Sanctions in totality. A rogue regime with total disregard for its citizenry will use whatever means it has to amass more weapons unless it is forced otherwise. I am realy very happy to hear that Isayas has accepted AU as an entity which represents Africa. This is an accepted political development. I hope Asmerom will try to make some developments to have a good relations to the two sisterly countries. Every body must understand that war and enemity can not benefit any country or people. I wish to establish a good relationships between eritrea and ethiopia in a mutual level of understanding. Political leaders of both countries must try to reverse the problems in wchich they have created for ten years ago. The problems between the to leaders should not affect the relationships of the poor poeples of eritrea and ethiopia. They are the same pople with everything: culture, colour, language, way of living and way of understanding. What is then our difference? Nothing at all. Cooperations of these two poeples can help us strongly to develope together. Mutual, understanding, mutual benefit and mutaual respect are the only solutions for these two poeples.

Like it or not Eritrea is our neighbor and we share common culture and history. Most importantly what happens in Eritrea affects Ethiopia directly. Sooner or later both Ethiopia and Eritrea will have to resume dipolomatic relations as there are many issues that connects the two countries. So, I hope the appointment of Girma Asmerom as AU Ambasssador helps the two countries to resume talks on how to normalize their relations. While we would like to see political reforms and opennes in Eritrea, at the end of the day it is up to the Eritreans to decide. For Ethiopia, the most important issues are security and stability in addition to the alternative accesses to sea.

Eventhough the 1998 ethio-eritrea war was caused by the very nature of eplf/shabia/one of the instigators was girmay asmorom.He misused his diplomatic status and played a negative role in between the two countries.This man was a good football player not a good diplomat.Girmay is good at one thing inaddition to his soccer ability. He knows what essayas afewerki wanted to hear.I remember during girmay asmerom last departure from addis said a lot of things .One of his speech was “I girmay asmorom is more ethiopian than eprdf” yes you were a better ethiopian but not this time even you are not an eritrean because your ideology do not represent both eritrean or ethiopian except that Egypt.
I really do not understand why a person who happens to represent his courntry to the AU becomes a subject of discussion on Aiga. Do we have lost the separation between AU and Ethiopia? If that is the mind set then there is a need to clear that out. Eventhough he is in addis Girma has nothing to do with Ethiopia. So we should let him do his job. I think it is good beginning to start a relation ship between the two brotherly people. In the first place the war that killed hundreds of thousands of young Eritreans and Ethiopians under the pretext of border was unnecessary. Eritrea (dictator Issayas and his gangs) are mainly to be blamed for the war. But don’t forget that there were and there still are some political groups and elements who always want to fan hatred and animosity among the two people. When the war erupted in 1997 these Ethiopian groups were delighted because they don’t want to see any good relationship among the two people. We were sad and concerned about our people in the border area. But they were extremely happy to see us going to war with Eritrea. They don’t want to see harmony and peace between Tigryans and Eritreans. Both Tigryans and Eritreans have lost human lives and our economy had shattered because of the war. Peace among Tigryans and Eritreans good because it would bring a lot of progress in our economic development. Cross border trade can flourish. Eritreans can gain money when we use their port. In the mean time for us Tigryans we can use Massawa 270 k.m away from Tigray. Thus there is mutual benefit in peace but there is mutual destruction in war. But off all people Girma Asmerom the Tigryan hater Shabiyan gang i swrong choice to bring peace among the two people. He should be the last person to come to Ethiopia.
Recently there was report of imprisonment of people involved in black market, that is, illegal activity in forex, buying of USD, EURO and other important currencies to be shipped to PIA. Now we hear that Girma is coming back to Addis as an Ambassador to the AU. Well, are the recent activities of putting behind bar some of the illegal Forex dealers designed to create the necessary enabling environment for the “Ambassador” to resume his past illegal activities. It is no secret that Girma was at the core of an illegal forex business while he was posted here in Addis as a representative of “His Excellency, PIA”. So, the return of Girma to Addis will add one more head-ache to the National Bank of Ethiopia and the Federal Police. What a great gift for 2011.

Whem I see the article i was very happy, just becouse it is the ice breaking, it is the blessing move. This might not good for those who wish dead lock between two countries, which is not blessing. In my openion, peace will bring peace, good heart bring good people and good nation.
I feel the pain becouse, i have blood from tigray, i do not want my pain to continue. Please those of you who barak againest this move, just becouse you have no relation with what happend between eri and eth.
I hope people to people campaign will add more light…what do think aiga..

Well, at least they are consistant….they keep trashing other countries and organizations but they always go back to kiss their asses. I’m sure Girma is extremely happy for going back to his beloved city. As long as he stays away from his master’s tantrum he is happy. He was eritrean ambassador to US and all he did was NOTHING. he coudnt even sign a single petty cash reciept at the embassy. such a worthless and useless.
As long as Isayas and Meles are in power, there will never be peace between Ethiopia and Eritrea. They are like the Berlin Wall between the two brotherly people. They both have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo to remain in power unchallenged. By scapegoating one another, they can rule forever. I hope and wish the new ambassador will try to be as independent from Isayas as possible and try to emphasize the things that bond the two people together rather than what devides them. As an Ethiopian who grew up and worked with many decent Eritrean friends and colleagues, I look forward for a close, cooperative (not competitive), and peaceful relation between the two countries. Who knows, there might even be a possibility to become ONE again.

Well,Eritrean regime was undermined AU,to begin with and given names to African union. But now Shabia realized that aligning with African union is indeed the way should be in order to reconnected with its neighboring countries.
I don’t see any problem if Girma Asmerom been appointed as Eritrean Ambassador to AU. The worst thing is how the authoritarian regime in Asmara thinks what used to say about AU? that is the real and shame question to shabia. Anyways, I am sure Girma, will amazed the fact that how Addis has been changed since he left Addis in couple of years a go.
