Mercinaries and Horn Politics

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

Ever since the one man government of Eritrea became the high priest in Eritrea and started its Ayatollah style diplomacy and governing in Eritrea , it has been a trouble maker in the Horn region. It has gone to war with all its neighbors.  After its crippling defeat by Ethiopia it has been forced to change its posturing. Instead of direct war it has opted for a proxy war and has been producing all kinds of mercenaries to destabilize its neighbors especially Ethiopia.

Kudos to the Ethiopian security forces and intelligence officers that have curtailed the actions of mercenaries.   Ethiopia has been proactive and at numerous times has apprehended them before they did damage to destabilize the country. Regrettably, in some instances these mercenaries  have succeeded and have caused mayhem. The question we want to ask is why are some of our people becoming messengers of Shaieba? Is it because Ethiopia’s constitution and its government has failed to accommodate people to live and exercise their right or is it simply greed and lush for money? If poverty is the cause then how do you solve such issues given the fight against poverty takes long time? Instead of running around the bush and putting blame on the messengers wouldn’t it be far more practical to address the top? The top in this case is the one man government of Eritrea who is arming and training mercenaries.  And what do you think about the many documentaries ETV has aired regarding the mercenaries?  Do you feel you have heard enough? Are those documentaries helping or upsetting you?  Do you feel the one man regime has been getting away for far too long?  What alternative solution could you provide?  Have Your say!

What Next for Aigaforum?

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

From time to time as any of you our faithful readers know we ask our general readership how we are doing. Aigaforum has been serving you for almost 10 years now. We started the page as a deterrent against the divisive mushrooming blogs and websites attacking the government of Ethiopia. The Tehadeso movement that resulted in the purging of a significant number of TPLF senior leaders started a frenzy of accusations  targeted at the remaining Senior leaders of TPLF and EPRDF. We thought the accusations were not honest and fair and believed Ethiopia was on the right track. Above all we wanted to show Ethiopia was not at the mercy of the  coming and going of a few leaders, as many of the bloggers and websites were insinuating.

Although Aigaforum’s mission and goal has been one and the same from time to time we have tried to face head on timely issues. We started promoting development and helping local NGO’s both financially and in kind but as political issues arose we dealt with them head on. The Algiers agreement along with the issue of Badme was one and the other was the now defunct Kinjit.

In the case of the Algiers agreement we were never convinced that the one man regime in Eritrea was interested in peace, thus rewarding him Badme be it a God forsaken land or a golden one, we did not feel it served the greater interest of the people! And in the case of Kinjit, what ever menefs (spirit) it was, we believed it was not good for the country and the peace loving Ethiopians who lived for thousands of years.

Now that the country has concluded a fourth national election, and Ethiopians have overwhelmingly endorsed the EPRDF and the Tehadeso movement, and now that the Algiers agreement and its shortfalls are addressed by the five point peace plan proposed by the Ethiopian government, and now that Ethiopians are supporting in droves local NGO’s  and are able to raise over a billion Birr to NGO like ADA, we thought we should ask you all our esteemed readers what is there for us to spend our time and energy and money? How satisfied are you by our service and what shortcomings have you observed over the years that we should improve? And above all what do you think Aigaforum should be engage in being forward looking. Have Your Say!

What Next for MEDREK and AEUP

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

Now that the Election Board has spoken out loud and the results will be official by June 21st should MEDREK and AEUP cut their loss and accept the people’s verdict and move on or try the last resort going to the courts to demand for re-election?

By all account even if there were irregularities  here and there EPRDF has won big! We have not heard any evidence that could change the lopsided victory of the EPRDF.The difference of votes between EPRDF and the next best MEDREK is too huge. Such difference can not be simply explained by irregularities!

Five years is not that long and opposition parties should look inward and figure out what went wrong and start the preparation for the next election. Some of their leaders are already throwing the towel with out a transition plan. That is so sad and not good for democracy but that is our view what about yours? Should MEDREK and AEUP accept the election result and move on or continue the legal process? Have Your Say!
