Should PM Meles Step Down? Why?

PM Meles is probably near his end of his exemplary carrier as public servant. His public service   started in the active student movement at AAU in the sixties followed by a leadership role in the TPLF and EPRDF as well as prime minister of Ethiopia today.  The Ethiopian constitution does not forbid parliament to elect the same prime minister again and again. The EPRDF organization internal rule does not prevent the same person from being elected in to leadership role again and again. And yet some folks expect Meles to relinquish his chairmanship of the EPRDF and his prime mister position for he has been there for over 18 years.

The question is should the constitution of Ethiopia be amended to include   term limit for the prime minister position? If amendment is not required then should EPRDF or any political organization change their internal rule to prohibit the same person from holding top leadership so that he/she does not end up the prime minister? We know other western democracies that have the same constitution like Ethiopia usually leaves the decision of long term tenure of a single person as top official of the country at the discretion of the person and his/her party. Can this work in Ethiopia?

Should EPRDF grant PM Meles wishes to step down or should the party keep him as their leader given there are higher causes where PM Meles leadership role is required? Last but not least do you think Meles should stay where he is or should step down? What are the main legacies of PM Meles as a leader of TPLF/EPRDF and prime minister if he is to step down? Have your say.

I believe PM Meles should step down.
He has acheived no other Ethiopian leader had for thier country. His legacy is of economic development and putting Ethiopia on track to Democratic process. His leaving office is one of those necessities to have a viable democracy.
God Bless Ethiopia and the PM.
Thank you.

Doesn't matter as long as woyane policy prevails. I don't mind if he stays if he can completely reform his party's policy either. After all, I think, he is the better person for the job from EPRDF camp....Please don't tell me it is Oromo or Amhara turn because nobody cares who is in the PM chair, as long as correct polices are executed.

Not,really he should stay atleast one term more due to unfinished business and well done from the previous administration, let see the out come of the 2010 election, hopefully EPRDF will win and it depends on the PM willing to serve again, and his party's choice to move on.

Meles is a very intelligent, dynamic leader of our times. He have shown the world how progress is made. He open the eyes of Ethiopians. No one can force him to step down but he want to give the torch to next person who ever that person is. But for sure it won't be from those sworn enemies of the people like tirikim and gimm butts. As the leader of the party I want him to stay for another decade. God bless Meles and God bless Ethiopia.

he made ethiopia landlocked nation

He should step down for he is a ......, ......., a ........ indeed. Kick him out to Eritrea. Give power to Ethiopians.

[edited to keep sanity, but your vote is counted]

If there is an iota of pride left in him, he should resign. But this is a common ploy used by a dictator to stay in power indefinitely. First, he would kill all competition around him and disparages competent people from getting involved in the political process so that he can appear invaluable. Then he starts heralding that he would like to step down. This is followed by a brouhaha by his stooges claiming that the country is doomed without the leadership of the 'all-knowing' dictator. This, of course, will be presented as the preference of the majority of the population in the country. There will be numerous discussion held in the media (which is totally controlled by the dictator) on how to dissuade the dictator from departing. Finally, the dictator reverses his decision because he is after all the `servant' of the people. Then life goes on as usual.
"Doron Siytaliluat Be Mechagna Talwat".

The majority of Ethiopians know that Meles Zenawi is not only a dictator like Mengistu but he hates the country he rules.

There has never been a leader in Ethiopia who has worked day and night to undermine the country he ruled.

The Badme war and its aftermath is enough to bring Melse to justice for loss of not only Ethiopian land but also more than seventy thousands of our people for the land to be awarded to Eritrea by international court.

On top of that the two years adventure in Somalia and its aftermath brought future animosity to Ethiopia's interest.

Selling extensive land to Sudan like his own personal property is an insult to Ethiopians and have already planted a bomb for future conflict with Sudan both North and South.

Why we should accept such a man for another five years on top of eighteen years he used to undermine our national interest and enrich himself and his circles ? Hell no !!! He must go or force him to leave!!!

long long long....overdue

Hi Aiga,

Why not ???? How long should we wait? He has done so much damage to the country than his predessors. Don't simply look the infrastructure development in Addis, where else do you use the money that we are getting from donors if we don't use it for infrastructure. Even Mengistu tried to do some in the middle of may wars left and right. We have to stop idolizing one person. Ethiopia is the home of 75 million people and you know it, and I know it there capable Ethiopians who can replace him big time.

I hope you post this.

Mikre

Well it all depends who is going to take over. It is good that leaders serve for specific period and hand over their power to another. However we should be in a level of politics and maturity where we have sufficient candidates who are worth of getting the title. Do we have those candidates? If not better, at least as good as Meles?. We shouldn't also forget that handling the power and the title to incompetent and amateur candidate is as equally wrong as clinging to power as African leaders do. You give the power to the inexperienced and amateur candidate then what do you expect? It shouldn't be just to assume that we have democracy we give power periodically to another. it is also to bring fresh energy and experience that can lead a country to a better position than the former. So.. Do we have that candidate who can perform better or at least as good as Meles ready to take over? We have to objectively assess the situtation and study who is out there as a possible candidate. We shouldn't blindly say, as it is common with some diaspora, that there are potential leaders, capable people etc. We saw what happened even what we thought potential leaders in the past. Even within the EPRDF, the members should objectively assess just like people evaluate you here for your graduate studies, work opportunity, etc. every potential candidate for its fitness to lead the country, knowledge, originality, and experience that can give a better future for the people and democracy in Ethiopia.

i like meles zenawi he is strong leader.it is not time to resign i know there are to many members can lead the country from oromo, amara debub region, and so but i never seen like meles .god blesse you meles god blesse ethiopia

Thanks Aiga for entertaining such a burning issue nowadays. Fist of all, PM Meles has done his best to bring the country to its feet, i can say economically, politically and diplomatically. what he failed to do is what he promised to do for tigray, the state which fought hard to bring democracy, peace and prospority to ethiopia but tigray did benefit little from development compared to the robustic changes of development in other states. No doubt that he is the greatest leader in our times, no matter what those who him say. He did not sell Djibouti and Eritrea like Menilk. whoever replaces him from any nationality will be guided by EPRDF and will follow the principles of the party as long as the party wins the majority. My hope is tigray will have a big voice to address its problems and agressively work for development which has been hampered due to the presence of PM Meles at the top.

All,

Please avoid going tangential and stick to the topic. Some of you have already started commenting on why he will not and who should replace him. There is nothing to learn from guess work!

Share your idea if he should or not and if the system in place is good as is or needs change.

Otherwise what you think about a person is beyond the topic. Love him or hate him tell readers if EPRDF should elect new chairman thus new prime minister if they win majority. No one asked any one about what Meles thinks? Okay!

Comments out of topic will not be posted!

Yes, I would like the pm to resign. Not because he is unable to do anything but for the country to learn something new. (a peaceful transfer of power!). I think he is young enough to come back to power after a break of 5 or 10 years if there is a need to have him back but this should be a ripe time to experiment transition. As he even said, the old guard of EPRDF should transfer leadership to the young generation .
I also would like to THANK him for what he did over the past 30 or more years for our country.
May God bless him and our country.

We should not demand change for the sake of change. This man has done a good job and we wanted him to do same in the future. Am proud of him and I don't want to see him leaving at this time. He has to remain in power for one more term. He was doing well in the infrastructure and am sure in the near future, God willing, the country will be transformed to the higher level under his administration.
Remember how hostile the region we are in and the demanding local and international issues we have. He is expert in crisis management. He was tested a number of times. Do we have to lose him at this trying times? Bold "NO".

I have been actively following the news regarding PM Meles's plan to step down. I had also a chance to read some articles over the Internet from individuals who support and oppose his plan.
PM Meles has done a marvelous job in terms of transforming the nation socially, politically and economically. I believe that the backbone which is required for a transformation is already laid down. As a result we will see incredible developments in the upcoming years. It is not suffice to evaluate the performance of PM Meles and EPRDF based on the short term achievements as revealed by statistical figures, even though, those figures are astonishing. The fruits of his handwork are yet to come. Just consider the investments made on construction of roads, education, health, electricity and the like. These are long term investments in which their contribution to the overall growth of the nation will not be an immediate. Considering all these facts his contribution to this nation is simply a magnificent. It will shine in the years to come when people start to evaluate him objectively, not based on hate. Having said that it doesn't mean that he is immune to shortcomings as he said it himself only gods are without wrong deeds.
With all these achievements does he need to step down? Before providing my stance on this matter it seems more logical to assess the nature of the party to which he belongs. This will give us a clue on the impact of his resignation and help us shape our thinking. From my observation the inner working of EPRDF is characterized by a team work though the role of individuals is remarkable in generating new ideas and shaking up the party politics. It seems suffice to mention that how many people did know that EPRDF has smart and pragmatic people like Arkebe before he was appointed as mayor of Addis. Before a policy is formulate and enacted as a law it undergoes through several discussions within the parties hierarchy. That means whether PM Meles steps down or not his input in preparing and enriching policies will remain intact. All the achievements of the nation are the outcome of the hard work of the EPRDF as a party.
Thus my firm stand is whether Meles steps down or remain in his position, we will not notice a significant effect. So, whoever is appointed in the PM position, he is supposed to execute the policies formulated by EPRDF and enacted as a law by the parliament. Well, if he steps down he will be able to set a precedent. However, this will be also inevitable whether in this term or next term. It is just a matter of time.

wow aiga providing a forum for free speech? seems you guys are testing the limit of free speech. hope you don't clamp down if it does not go your way.back to the issue in all seriousness. i personally believe meles did some good and some bad and some serious damage to the national security of the country.especially when it comes to the issue of border eritrea or eritreans he never failed to act as a traitor.the sooner he goes the better before he compromises another national interest and not to mention the fact that he had been on power nearly a quarter of a century. now

Unfortunately for Ethiopia yes he ought to step down. Ethiopians need to really see it to believe that our leaders will voluntarily step aside setting a peaceful democratic process. Regardless how much some of us would like him to see leading the country, stepping down will be a great roll model for all Africans.

Long live Prime Minister Meles Zenawi. Ethiopia will always be grateful for all the achievements that he had brought.

The fact that PM Melese Zenawe's leadership has made a signifant progressive change in Ethiopia's political and social course of history is indisputable. Had he not made a spectacular ability in leadership, we would not talk even this agenda today. However, it is equally important to understand that replacing a capable leader by another person would maintain the earned legacy of the outgoing leader. There is no earned and established legacy from a dictator, and no one would ask a dictator to step down peacefully. Keeping one man in power for so long is the sign of defecient and deterioration, which its ultimate inevitabilty rests on dictatorship. There is no good reason to believe PM Meles to keep in power longer than he has served. First his good legacy will be soon replaced by another name for retaining power over two decades which would not represent democratic values. Secondly the on going democratic process, will show uncertainty for a one man strong personal cult would overpower the internal party life.Thrid, Ethiopia is a country that had never replaced a leader via democratic, and peaceful means, thus, has to make a historic course of break through now, before it is too late. By doing so, the work of Meles, the remarkable history of the TPLf and the strength of the EPRDF will remain a profound character in our history of building Ethiopia.
Thank You for giving me the chance to go over my advise.
Besrat Amare.

I do not know what to think. He is defintely good at his job and there is no question about that. I think, it makes him a even a better leader to do this for the first time int the country history. However, I worry if it is really a right time for him to step down now. I can not decide!

Sltaan Errist aydelem...he should go home until charges are brought against him for many many crimes under his direct supervision.

Above and beyond the majority of the country does not like him as a person, his initiatives and the policy in-place, and his thugish organization.

He is a vicious dictator and tribalist ethiopia can live without.

There is no doubt I am going to miss Meles's wit and intelligence but he is just too pro eritrea to be accepted by many ethiopians who despise him for favoring Eritrea over ethiopia. I know he has achieved a lot in terms of transforming Ethiopia but I live with a fear of my country once again being open to abuse by Eritreans like they did prior to 1998. The only reason he has not achieved his dream of prospering Eritrea at the expense of ethiopia is because Shabia is unwilling to work with him. otherwise as we have seen it from his recent policy, It is obvious that he is still trying. therefor, I want him to go before he achieves that. we need a pro Ethiopian leader of any ethnic background. but I do really appreciate his struggle to free us from darkness but he is just too flirty with the worst enemy Ethiopia has ever had, Eritrea. please go, just go.

I want to raise basic issues regarding leadership. How and when leadership can we have?Look the quality of the members of parlament, majority aren't qulifaied.Look the difference between Meles and the other. Why higher intelectuales did not participate in Ethiopian Politics? Did you remeber finally derg remain with what kind of people??
Let's share the power for popular and intelectuals Ethiopians.

He must step down if he cares about democracy & Ethiopia, 30 years in leadership is to much atleast it looks like we have democracy. In those years he achieve a litlle & messed up a lot, with the connection of Eritrea and put article 39 the right secede for the sake of Eritrea IF he has alittle courage , cancle article 39 and ethnic base states because he achieve his goal so its good for the rest of Ethiopians

Aiga thans for the opportunity,
I am sorrry to respond this as a "Tigrean" but the problem is about My Ethiopia.
It is not a matter of leaving or staying in the office. The leadership has become out of TOUCH. The leadership has no mercy to understand the people's interest. I guess it is too late to fix unless they excercise genuine multiparty system.
The bottom line either we disn't know EPRDF or EPRDF underestimated the people of this great nation.

His biggest failure-He wasn't able to put a law that has no double standard. NO SYSTEM AT ALL.
THE sad part, who ever comes to the throne, his first job would be ridiculing the constitution. Well ofcourse not from EPRDF member but from other opposition parties.

The whole arguement could be boiled down to let him see off. Because majority of leadership depends on him.

Change is inevitable but I wish he could use his "talent" as a retired citizen to play a role as much as he polarized the people to reunite hte nation. Sarcastically Aboy Sebhat said EPRDF "reunited" Ethiopia.

Dear..Meles ..Stay in the country, do not leave the country so that we know you break the trend fully. I would be reluctant to give him the benefit of a doubt but how about one last time..But not until he resigns.
Can't wait!

Meles is one of the
best leaders yet. However, it is time for him to hand over his seat to the next generation of leaders.
Ethiopia should be governed through the rule of law and it should not matter who the individual
leader is as long as he exercises his power within the prescribed law. Democracy and collective leadership should be able to whip the next PM in
line.

There is a poltical process in place in the country. If he's party wins the next election means that the puplic is approving the job of the party as well as the PM as a public rep. If he's party loses he has to go and if he's party wins and his party wants him to resign for not doing his job he has to follow his party's rules and regulation. In a political process an indvidual can resign for pesonal reasons. The pm resignation should not be a pulic opinion but should be his party and the pm personal decission.

Without any hesitation Meles is the smart person Ethiopia has ever had. This is facts if one has clear and un biased mind they can measure his talents what he did in the ground. In his administration all aspects of education, health, infrastructure, peoples right to administer themselves I can mention all with in this few minutes what he done in 18 years. But the bottom line is what ever one says he did good things for his country. I do not say he is absolute he made mistakes especially I can say all the decisions made with small nation of Eritrea. I need every body to know is no one absolute or 100 % right in his or her presidency you can refer any sources. Also we got a lot of Meles to follow his foot I am sure a lot if they got the chance.

Yes he should step down but not only Meles but also his party as well and ethiopian people deserve REAL free and fair not fake election.

Ethiopia really need Change.

Free Election for the people to decide what will be their furure. We all stand for that until we see it happen what ever and how long it takes.
May God Bless Ethiopia and the people.

To be honest, I am not sure. Of course, we need to see a new example set in Ethiopia history but there is also a danger. EPRDF is not a unitary party that and it is only held together by personalities than unity of purpose. Before he resigns he need to bring the parties together to unit the parties to make sure all would feel equal and merit prevails. The present reality is individuals in the leaders think that they earned their position because they represent their ethinic group, not because they deserve it. The reverse of this implication is, when one lose his position and privileges he may present it as exclusion of his ethnic group etc. This is the biggest challenge for EPRDF and might create a disaster. Now this is not possible because there are dominant personalities like Melese, who hold the team together. EPRDF created ethnic political structure to solve old problems and I but they never thought it can have its own fallbacks. It is just like Socialism. It was good thing to end economic and social inequalities eliminate exploitation etc but Socialism also gives excessive power to dictators to eliminate its rivals brutally and create a one man dictatorship. So, the first crack may immerge on simple question of who should be the next priminister. I believe, it should go to the most capable person, but other may prefer to see as symbolic ethnic representation. To avoid this problem EPRDF must push towards closer unity rather than rivalry. Apart from this concern, I want the PM to resign and let a new leader and a fresh vision to immerge. That also makes Melese the first in our history to earn respect from all of us.

Hi All,
I think it is undemocratic to talk about this issue. If we really believe in democracy, then it is up to the majority to decide. If the majority votes for EPRDF and EPRDF elects Meles as the chairman of the party, then we have to accept it without if and but.It is nobody`s business whether Meles has to go or not.Remember,we should learn how to respect majority votes.

Aiga

I have a mixed feeling. As much as PM Melese has carried he country this far, I think he should retire for only one reason... that it can be done in Ethiopia too lead by an example and leave a legacy. But care must be done for a smooth transition. We should also limit the number of terms in the constitution.

Meles is great as a leader but he should not leave office before cleaning the mess on eritean issue. I read an article by dawit weldegiorgis and proud of him. Meles PLEASE consult intellectuals and change the political atmosphere in the horn of africa. Beside wish u the best.

It is surprising (even stupidity) thinking that "No one will replace Meles". It is also an insult for the member of the party. in a simple it mean that if Meles died by chance, the party ingeneral and the country ingeneral would be blind because no one will substitute him. Think of this in a broad sense please. For me change comes when the PM of ethiopia has a limited time.

i do not understan what you guys saing............ does not enough one guy 20years in power? it show's how we are poor mind we are...... we can have to many melles if we can give chance to others.........but it sames we really not seen the future........how many woman and man died for this thing(TPLF) in my opinen meles did his part but it is engough for him 10years ago......maybe some of you not like my idea but one person can not make any different... in my mind we could have 3PM since TPLF in power but,,,,,,

PM Meles has done what he could over the last 18 years. I think he is still the best among the people in EPRDF but if they keep Meles in power any longer the credibility of EPRDF as a viable party that can lead the country over the long-term will highly questionable. It will simply appear that it Meles' party that will collapse when he is no longer at the leadership position. If EPRDF wants to be a dependable party of the future, they have to remove Meles when his current term expires .

Semere

I beieve that the decision is up to him and his party. However, I believe that, if it was up to the Ethiopian people to vote, I would vote for him to stay because there is a lot more that he can contribute - more than he has done so far, and he has done a lot.

Yes 100 times. It is such a shame to ask a question like this. I think you may think ethiopia and its people are the private property of Meles and his group. If not, then do not even dare to ask such a silly questions. Don't you think 20 years is more than enough?

Prime Meles Zenawi should not step down. He is an intelligent, knowledgeable,
great leader with great patience. He has changed ethiopia for the better. Give him more chance, you will see he will make wonders. Long live Meles

Absolutely no!

Leaders of Meles’ caliber are not easy to come by. This gentleman is rare in his intelligence, courage, and political judgment. Besides, the progress in Ethiopia is great now. Why mess with it? Let’s keep this “son of Ethiopia” as long as the constitution allows…. As they say “If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it”!!!

Abe, a serious fun of Meles!

One key element of good leadership is preparing others who can replace you. Meles has done excellent job to eradicate poverty and introduce the nation to the civilized world. As he is human, he can not live forever and one day some one has to replace him. I think it is time for him to step down after the current term and let someone else step up to the plate and continue the legacy.

Meles will also remain a key asset to serve the nation as advisor and consultant.

Long live to the nation of Ethiopia!!

Dear Aiga,
As usual, you have to be thanked for the good work!

In the first place let me tell you that I like the PM so much so that I sometimes defend him blindly. Haviung said that
I must tell you that question whether the PM should step down does not answer the question whether Ethiopia will be better off after him.

He as a member of the EPRDF played a leading role for goo or for bad. We all know friend and enemy that he is the most dynamic person Ethiopia has ever had. But we belive and hope that he is replaceable. He really did fundamentally exellent job as a leader but the bigger credit goes to the whole membersof the prty even if the leader (in African politics) is the decisive element.

As there ar Many ggod things our PM has done, he has done also some wrong things. We all agree with friends and enemies. Where we disagree with the ardent enemies is that they claim that he did the mistakes on purpose because he is not 'pure' Ethiopian bla bla...

BUT no matter what, the cronic problem of PM Meles are:
1. His wrong policc towards Eritrea, very wrong and confused philosopy
2. non-chrismatic apprach
3. deaf to the feelings of the people including around him
4. His treatmnet to the poor people of Tigray.
Meles brought undeniably good things to Ethiopia as a whole, but for sure the people of Tigray could be much better of without him. He left Tigray to the hands of Lords Gebru and Tsegay for the last 20 years and with the exeption of the last two years, there was not aspahlted road. Is not that shame on him when he says we contruct roads where we get profit.

But to push Ethiopian democracy a bit further, it is an absolute necessity to limit the tems of our leaders!!!!!

If Meles is elected as PM again in the election of 2010, then Ethiopia is condomned to one man rule.

I know that as long as we do not have responsible, dfference-embracing and genuine OPPOSITION, it does not have that much difference whther Meles stays in power or steps down. But we have to believe in change and we are always better off with that. So PM should step down with all dignity and should be respcted more than any ruler in Ethiopia if he does that voluntarily.

But I respect him I like him and I thank him for his hard work.

God bless our country, ETHIOPIA!!!!!!!!!

Has there been any individual in modern history been democratically elected and served any country for 20yrs or more? The answer is no it wouldn't be Democracy I don't care how smart Meles is there's got to be a new voice and a new Idea for Ethiopia

The PM minister made it clear that he wants to step down.the party should not have a right to FORCE HIM STAY!!! I think those people who are in the party trying to force him stay in power have some hidden agenda. They believe, if he lives they have to live too, that is why they are insisting that he stays. He has done great for the country and 18 years in power is a very long time by any standard. The party should thank him and honor him and let him resign as he wishes. If the party thinks PM meles is all they got, they should be ashamed of themselves. I think it is time for PM to be the first PM to resign on his own terms in the history of our country. by doing this he will be teaching a lesson for the future generation! life is short let the prime minister enjoy it and let him have time to enjoy his kids and write his memoirs and so on....

EPRDF without Meles will remain corrupt. Meles has been challenging EPRDF since 2001 and has proven reformist since then. However, I would say he should leave office by 2010.

DEAR THE AIGAS!

(Hope this will be posted!)

It is my belief that Prime Minister Meles Zenawi has to step down (PMMZ)! The sooner he does the better both for his party and for the country. I wanted PMMZ to step dawn because the longer he stays, the more a liability he gets for his party and the country I am afraid. Even though he had moved the country in an insurmountable advantage in Education, transport, health and power infrastructures to the highest possible standard which will give the country a big push towards achieving the right path of development. He has also measurably failed to make independent judicial system to properly function as yet .I believe there is no an apparent system which will uphold the rule of law and the right of individuals to the extent of safeguarding the constitution that was built for. His approach to the war in Eritrea was still one of the most ambivalence stances he secretly adopted for the incumbent prime minister which I am afraid will haunt him and his party for a long time to come. Subsequently, single-handedly he has arranged to land lock the country with out the due emphases and due process of International Maritime law to preserve the National Interest of the country. Unlike hotel service, usually portrayed by PMMZ, Ports are not a mere export import presumptuous places per say that you buy them from the provider. It is not that simple…it is the countries life line to uphold its security and could inhibit or prohibit the development strategy of a country whether to stay still or come out of the devilish poverty trap once and for all. For us ports are not a matter of choice, it is an ample means of survival. Ethiopia’s peculiar position and sensitive internal dynamism specific to the horn necessitates to the prevalence and the effective use of its ports as a security precondition. Look with the huge population (Africa’s second at the moment) and with its alarming growth rate, how often are we to mitigate to the vulnerability to draught prevalence, leaving aside the foreign currency disbursement that we are paying to the use of third countries ports? Eprdf under the guidance of PMMZ lost the plot out here. His specific adherence to the use of port services of third countries looks Penny wise and POUND Foolish and has taken the country on stand still. The good performance of the country is nullified here. What percentage of our GDP are we paying for it? How is it really suffocating the banking reserves of the country apart from other testimonials? What is its effect on our foreign reserve? What is the significance relation to foreign investment of the country then? HOW IS DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY AFFECTING TO THE NATURE, MAGNITUDE AND SOURCE OF GOODS AND SERVICE PRODUCED IN THE COUNTRY? What is the significance relation to our defence strategy considering to the pirates and other terrorist activities in the world and around us? The good prime minister does know the shabby consequences very well but chose to gloss it over. With or without the presence of the PMMZ these things are the ones which will have a significant effect of our development. To address this mess, I think PMMZ has to step down because these are very vital interference that will not be done on his watch. Some one able enough to look these into perspective irrespective of his ethnicity has to replace the Prime minister as soon as possible for the interest of the country. It does not really matter which Ethnicity is he from really? Does it? I am not relating his stepping dawn to the port issue merely.

Further more. other sustentative issues like His inability to adopt a very transparent policy to advocate and install a prospective and well defined pattern of using resources in all the regional and intra regional estates to ameliorate a vibrant political culture is a BIG miss in his CV.I am afraid the fact that we have not got an open and transparent system has induced to corruption, ill efficiency, favouritism and nepotism. Above all the inability to divide party and government structure has rendered to concentrate power in few hands and corrupts absolutely.
The fact that people who are installed for power are mainly attributed on mere language in spite of perspective knowledge, meritocracy and achievement slowed down about the tenderness and flexibility to adopt the already existing party or government policy readily made in taters .Therefore people resort to forsake or worship people who claimed to be seniors but have not usually have an adequate know how or knowledge to formulate policies or adopt new ones. Because of these tendencies Eprdf led by PMMZ has lost a very viable political resource of producing young Eprdf people for over eighteen solid years that could have been competent choice to replace Meles and the likes are wasted. Having said that no one denies PMMZ’s outstanding presence of his question/answer on ETV and international arena. It is common knowledge that his shrewd theatrical approach to swart party members and machining political opponents is well recorded. In a country like Ethiopia, where the prevalence of Draught is quite common, there is no universally adopted policy as to how food security at house hold level is to be attained and when? There is still no clear Land use and land reclamation policy despite the fact that Eprdf’s policy is nurtured on Agricultural development Lead Industrialisation (ADLI).
I wander a couple of days ago, the hard working Zeru Hagos was wondering why his Excellency the prime minister was asked to step dawn…He even tried to like us to believe that there is no any body like to replace him. I am afraid; facts on the ground do not testify that understanding. PMMZ is replaceable. I do not know and nothing personal like that but to continue the development of the country unabated it is safe to argue that the PMMZ is stepping dawn. The sooner he steps dawn, the better! If he does, it will be the best historical perspective that Ethiopia has to once again usher to African politics!

Dear Aiga
Thank You for the chance I got. As mach as I like PM Meles what he has done to the country and to his party, I hate to see him leave the PM post. But the sake of democracy and learning experience PM Meles has to step down form his position.
Every Ethiopian and the world knows that PM Meles brought a change to Ethiopian politics and beyond that. History will remember him. His is the great leader. He showed by action not by word like the previous leaders. He is articulate politician. We all know that during Mengestu's ear how we felt being Ethiopian. After EPRDF (Meles Zenawi)the pride of Ethiopian resurrected. At the mean time I thank him for what he has done for the last 35 years. He is no less than Mandela. We all know why some indivduals hate him not because of he is poor job because of he won't let them destroy the county. PM Meles God Bless you and your family. Mikias.

Two things come to my head. as far as economic growth, good governance zero tolerance to corruption, for better life for Ethiopians, better international relations and security she should at least stay one term. as far as to score point that an African leader relinquish power voluntarily is concerened he will make history. But does that replace the above achievements? not sure

Should Aigaforum ask this silly question at all? Should Obama step down after 4 or 8 years? I thought the admin lives in States. Should I call the question nonsense?

Dear Aiga;
Thank You for giving us to put our voices on your web site.
Building democracy is not easy job. Sometime we have to let it go what we like just to be fair. As much as I like PM Meles what he has done to his country and to his party EPRDF, I hate to see him go from his post. But for the sake of democracy and learning experience, he should leave his post to the new person for a new and fresh idea.
We Ethiopians and the world knows how much change brought to the country and the image of Ethiopian to the rest of the world. He has done everything he could to create new Ethiopia. We all know that some individual hates him, not because of his poor job because of he doesn't allow them to destroy Ethiopia. We all know that how it felt being Ethiopian during Mengestu's era. After EPRDF (Meles Zenawi) the pride of being Ethiopian resurrected. I know we want him to stay on his position but it is always democracy first.
At the mean time I would like to thank PM Meles Zenawi what he has done for the last 35 years. History will remember him. One of the great leader in Ethiopian History. Thanks Meles. God Blesses you and Your family.
Mikias.

He should step down!

He has already achieved and sacrificed a lot which many couldn't. It is time he persues his own personal life and put another milestone in Ethiopian politics - peaceful transfer of Power.

Good luck in his future endaevours.

It is good if he is step down from power. We need a change of face whatever good or bad he did for the last 34 years in Tigray and 18 years i n Ethippia. Democratically speaking, as one governer who stays in power increases it shows how the regime is un democratic. Whatever it is he should show his quality in producing similar people who can replace in his position. Otherwise his presence in power for the next five years may create other suspicion on his interset of the Premiership not in developing the country. Personally I don't have any problem with the intellegent man but he should be the first man to show his quality to transfer power peacefully to another person. May God bless to Ethiopia and its people.

Yes EPRDf should grant PM meles wishes to step down. It will be for the first time in Ethiopian History a leader to step down vallentrly this guy mkes history by puting economic development and Democratic proces in the country and know he is makeing another history by steping down velentrly and it is a very good start and a good lesson for others. I wish him the best he is a great leader in our time.
Mekonnen

I do not know why people like the pm to continue in his office while they hate his worst mistakes. Look, the bigest mistake he has ever made to this country is the whole isue of Ethio eritrea relations and some of the main principles of Ethiopia’s foreighn relations.

Anothere biggest problem is he has made the educational system of the country standardless by any international measure. he changes his policies 10 times and you can imagine how many ethipians suffer after grade 10.

Another thing is that he has led the country for more than 20 years and the image of the country has been the worst of its kind in the outside world_ Poverity, misiery, aid adicted, war monger, ....! We have seen no practical attempt to change this image and if he tried to do it, it means he has failed because he has brought no change, but wors than before.

Aiga: it is good to have a forum like this. However, the topic is not to our understanding or it is not related with our/the country issues. Why we are worried and disscues about one person or one party? you think this can solve our polotical, economical, social etc problem in our country? I don't think so. Don't try to inform as that there is some one who cultivate his cult in ethiopia. So change the topic.
Thank you

Oppositions have to becarefull with their words. They're making it hard to the people to live together. If so; cessetion may be invitable. Meles listens to his organization. It is the EPRDF to decide; otherwise meles will be very hapy to leave we all heard him saying it. He is staying until hate poletics end.

gebrai

He should leave the office. I have several reasons for this. Still there are 12 million people are needy of assistance. PM Meles promised to feed Ethiopian ppl three times a day 10 years ago. but still Most Ethiopians eat less than twice a day and dependant of food assistance. EPRDF policies are a total failure. (P.S dont raise about the construction boom in big cities of Ethiopia). That doesn't indicate a real progress in Ethiopia. More than ever in Ethiopian modern history, Ethiopians are live under fear and stress due to economic hardship and human rights abuse, inflation, power shortage, ....so many problems. so Ato Meles should leave his office to next person. Personally i dont think he is leaving the office. And we need absolutely constitutional ammendement. The Prime Minister shouldnt elect more than twice. I hope AIGA editors will post my comments with out any problem.

I think post Meles era will be a very scary one for our country because no one with in his party has the ability to consolidate power like he did. He is very shrewd person who very well understans the psychic of the people of Ethiopia. If he had given them unlimited democratic rights they would not know how to use and they will be on each others throat. As a result nothing will get done. If he totally deprived them, they will take arms like himself during his youth and eventually they will topple him. So, he was left with no other options, but to apply the carrot and stick approach. I believe it is long way before Ethiopians can see eye to eye with those who have opposing views and discuss issues, compromise and come up with workable solutions, like those other civilized people. Can you imagine OLF and pro unity organizations working in a free and democratic political environment to promote peace and stability, leave alone, allow development, progress and fight backwardness? Ethiopians are not tolerant of opposing political views. Look at all those political organizations that split into two like one celled organism now and then. Do we really to believe that if these organizations are part of the political system the country will go forward? I personally do not believe so and would like to see Meles continue his policy until it is certain that Ethiopia will not be a failed state after he leaves office. I understand he is tired, but I advise him to take vacation on a regular basis to recharge, at the same time he needs to delegate responsibilities to able individuals instead of loyal opportunists.

He has repeatedly said HE WANTS to step down. In my view, only idiots would want to be led by a leader who doesn't want to lead them. Ethiopians are not idiots, so he should step down.

I would like to thank the PM and all members of the EPRDF party first for their extreme dedication and hard work to bring peace and stability in Ethiopia. Thank-you PM for Your party's long strugle, sacrifice and hard work under your leadership our beloved country Ethiopia and its people are marching on full fledged democracy and rapid development. Dear PM Meles, you lead your party for victory 18 years ago and now you have been leading the people of Ethiopia for devolpment and prosperity. The transformation our country is going through on all levels proves your impressive leadership skill, talent and infinite knowledge. Dear PM, You are still young, fair at the same time tough and very experienced leader. You still have so much to offer with your knowledge and leadership skill to your party and the people of Ethiopa. So PM Meles I plead with you to stay where you are now aleast one more term, Thank-you.

PM Meles's leadership did in fact contribute to the economic development of the country, participatory political culture by Ethiopians, fight against corruption, safeguard of sovereignty of the country (Eritrea & Somalia cases), and various social and infrastructural improvements throughout the country. There has not been a single motion for Vote of No Confidence against the PM by opposing parliamentarians in the parliament in its history. Therefore, the Ethiopian people should be given the right to express their Vote of Confidence. I don't think there is any constitutional or political justification for the PM to step down unless he has his own personal reasons. Let the Ethiopian people decide by the Vote of Confidence and let's know what the Ethiopian people think. But the PM's contribution to his country is the utmost and exemplary and history attests the facts. Therefore, let the people express their fundamental right of Vote of Confidence in the absence of a single motion for Vote of No Confidence in almost two decades.

He should leave only if it is for the right reasons....It will definitely win him praise from ordinary people for being a leader willing to make room for new leadership. The problem arises if he is leaving ONLY because he wants to please the opposition leadership.

The opposition leadership are not the type to appreciate any sort of goodwill gestures. They will probably say this change in leadership is some sort of stunt....in other words they will continue complaining. Even after the "dicator (in their words)" Meles leaves...they will still complain. There is no end to that complaining, unfortunately.

So I say, if the Prime Minister wants a break, let him have a break and return to private life...or maybe to work at some International stage etc. He has served well and deserves a well earned retirement. As far as term limits....they really have very little use in a Parliamentary system, but the issue can be addressed at any time.

In Britain for example, some Prime Ministers have served for over 15 or so years...this is obviously lost on some factions in the diaspora who have not studied a single book, god forbid. At least read a newspaper or something before posting folks...term limits are not the ultimate factor in determining a democratic system.

Anyway in closing, If he is leaving for the right reasons...then god speed to the good man. God Bless Ethiopia.

PM Meles Zenawi is the best of all Ethiopian leaders so far. He has unfinshed bussines. Let him stay one more term and let us all Ethiopians work together to eradicate poverty under his leadership. It was good to see a regime change in Eritrea before he leaves office.

I think he should resign. As much as I like PM Meles for what he and his party has done it will be necessary to be a good example and move on. Like the PM said he is the party solider and he will never leave his party. So, We should not fear to take on a new leader. If and when the time comes for him to leave his post is because he knows he is leaving his party in good hands. That should give us hope and faith
God Bless Ethiopia and
Best wishes to PM Meles and family

I reckon he should step down coz he hasn't done any thing good to Ethiopia. He only developed externalism in the past 18 years just trying to appear good from outside to impress the western countries but he hasn't achieved any tangible result in the country. He doesn't believe in his own capacity to make change in the country through work. He has develped a professional way of begging habbit within the country. He has also created animosity among the people of the country especailly the Tgrian People with the rest part of Ethiopia

Thank you AIGA for letting such discussion. PM Meles has done a tereffic job thus far. But he and the ruling party need to make sure that what have been done thus far, need to be well founded and should have a continuity...I really donot want to see going back ...Ethiopia is tired of starting over when ever leadership changes. Therefore, I do believe that Meles needs to stay for another term, in the mean time the party needs to select effective and promising leaders (which I believe EPRDF is very rich in such personalities) and get him/her to start working with PM Meles or take the post towards the end of PM Meles' term. That way the party can make sure the continuity of the admistration and its policies...and avoid unforseen unstabilities in the country. Further more, currently we are in very difficult situation...world financial crises, unfinished war with Eriteria and Somalia...Ethiopia really needs MELES and his leadership in these difficult times...

Thanks

As much as EPRDF agreed and they make it smooth power transfer I think he should resign. This will be historical for TPLF/EPRDF and for PM Meles, but if he is continue as PM every thing may be eroded, thus for what he and his party has done it will be necessary to be a good example and move on.

Yes the constitution of Ethiopia should be amended to include a given term for how long the Prime minister should be in office. The term limit for any political leader should be limited and that responsibility lies within the party itself. I think What EDP states in its law is perfect. Just look at the opposition figures. They have been in that position for just too long. Sitting as a leader for 18 years by any standards is wrong. We don't have to look for any laws here and there, we are blocking the way for new ideas to come through. Unfortunately leaving this issue to the individual in that position doesn't seem to be a good idea.

Yes PMMZ should leave office. He has done his best and it's time he steps down. That by itself would be a major legacy. I'm sure EPRDF has several other candidates.

Thank You Aiga
BF

i don't want to miss meles from ethiopian leadership. he is our great leader. ethiopia never had such a leader in its history. the country has scoreed tremendous development change in his leadership. he is not only working for ethiopia but he is struggling also for africa. so how can one needs to miss such a personality unless he has a problem.long live for meles and his leadership.

"Ethiopia really needs MELES and his leadership in these difficult times..."

I SECOND MULU. ALL THE REASONS ON WHY HE SHOULD STAY HAVE BEEN SAID! I KNOW HIS FOLLOW MEN CAN MANAGE TO TAKE OVER BUT IMAGINE THE ON JOB TRAINING AND TIME IT WOULD TAKE TO SHAPE SOMEONE INTO SUCH A RESPONSIBILITY AND LEADERSHIP TO DEAL WITH INTERNATIONAL AND NATIONAL MATTERS. ETHIOPIA CAN'T AFFORD ANY SLOW DOWN OR PAUSE AT THIS MOMENT. IT NEEDS TO STRIVE FORWARD WITH OUR EXPERIENCED AND WORLD CLASS LEADER, PM MELES ZENAWI. I KNOW HE DESERVES A BREAK BUT JUST FIVE MORE YEARS.
JUST FIVE MORE YEARS!
WE NEED PM MELES FOR FIVE MORE YEARS!
JUST FIVE MORE YEARS!
AFTER 5 YEARS, WE WILL SET YOU FREE! THE ETHIOPIA PEOPLE WILL GIVE YOU A BREAK FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE TO ENJOY, TRAVEL, AND TO DO WHATEVER YOU WANT TO DO! AIGA, I SAY PM MELES SHOULD DEFINITELY STAY FOR ///// MORE YEAR!

He should stay for at least one more term. There is no reason to follow the recommnedations forwarded by his enemies. He is now the most loved and respected Ethiopian. He has even started gaining international recognition.

PM Meles is our first democrat leader and if his party wins the next election(which I don't doubt)and nominates him to be the PM or president of our country, there is no reason he shouldn't continue to lead the country. I am not going to look for some shadowy contender. This is not gambling. Meles has almost all the qualities as a leader. He still has so many unfinished jobs (among them corruption and Eritrea)to put under control.

PM Meles i respect him a lot, and if it was possible i am very happy to give him what's left on my living life. i called him the master mind of modern poletics and economy. no one can challenge or replace Meles so far.
he was doing very well in every thing in his life, wherever he was, including at school. and now he is the best leader for ethiopian future. he is too good in everything theorical and practical. it is very hard to discaver a person like him.
am not saying he is perfect, no one is perfect, with whatever mistaks he has done, still he is the top leader. what is the secret which makes PM Meles to be come what he is now. the answer is not a pazzle. TPLF/EPRDF the secret for Meles to be master mind of modern poletics and economy on the planet. we need to ask what EPRDF achieves to the country? and whay? i hope everyone will answer with discavering the right image where it is Ethiopia now. our country is one of the fastest growing countries in the planet. i hope we all can see that. if not who ever not able to see that, need's to question him/her self incase there is something wronge.
another thing to answer is, what is democracy? the short answer is majority rules. from this point, if EPRDF win's majority on election 2010 and EPRDF make's PM Meles the chairperson of the party, then the process is democratic. i do not thing there is better democracy than this in our planet. this was the process on past few elections in Ethiopia and this was the process within EPRDF and TPLF since DEDEBIT. this is the true calture of TPLF/EPRDF. i now it is very hard to trusted what i am saying by the the enemies of the country's whether they are Ethiopian or not, but this is the truth.
If people think's PM Meles is the best leader, if people think's EPRDF is the best gevenment vere seen in our country, why we do we need PM Meles to step down? are we worried about who stay's in power for long? or we are worried about Ethiopia's future?
i think Ethiopians we need to move on by stoping useless things, like ethnic problems and many things.
for Ethiopian future we better support PM Meles to stay in power if EPRDF need's him again.
thnaks to EPRDF.

long live EPRDF
God bless all Ethiopians.

He should NOT if it is simply for the sake of it.

However, if there's a smooth transition plan in place, it will be GREAT:
1) for the country since it brings fresh blood in to the picture,
2) for himself as an individual since he needs to go for a much deserved break and
3) also for EPRDF as a party to demonstrate its maturity and also to lead/excel by example and by setting precedence ...

NO question that we have so many competent people for the job both within and out of EPRDF. However, I won't support his leaving office with out a SMOOTH TRANSITION PLAN in place. Ethiopia can not afford that ...

PEACE!

I DID NOT THINK MR.PM RESIGN AS THIS TIME,HOWEVER HE HAVE TO STAY IN POWER UNTIL THE IDOLOGY OF NAFTANYE AND NARROW MINDNESS ELIMINATE FROM EHIOPIA.IF HE STEPDOWN I THINK BIG TROUBLE FOR THE COUNTRY EITHR THE OPPOSITION OR EPRDF DOES HAVE ABEST MAN WITH NEW IDEA FOR THE FUTURE OF THIS HOPELESS COUNTRY.I VOTE FOR HIM FOR NEXT 5 YEARS NO MORE YEARS FOR HIM OR HIS PARTY.UNTIL THEN THE PEOPLE OF ETHIOPIA HAVE TO ORGANIZE THEMSELVES FOR THE POWER OF THE PEOPLE BY THE PEOPLE FOR THE PEOPLE.I AGREE THE TERM OF PM NOT MORE THAN 2 AND MORE THAN 8 YEARS.

Sir,

Better he leaves in grace. The time is now! The added value of staying for another 5 years is going to be marginal in his overall achievements, good or bad. But if he leaves, then he creates a new political culture where by a leader leaves office in peace. The country will then have for the first time an X-PM or an X-top leader alive in the country, exemplifying for the road for the future. Needless to say that the constitution has to be amended. No matter what, there should be a term limited for an individual. The party can win several elections but people have to change. Why would you limit the term of a president and not the PM? what was the motive? We witness many African countries with term limit such as Ghana, Mali, Senegal, etc behaving better and cementing democracy. Meles's leadership has installed a constitution, he has walked through it as a PM with some good results, dealt with some key chronic social and economic challenges of the country. Next, another person from EPRDF or any other part if elected has to pursue the development and democratization agenda further in good spirit. We should get out of the old culture of insecurity, oh "if the PM goes, who else will do the job?" Come on!, this is a country of 80 million people with a lot of fertile minds potentially sitting there untapped waiting for opportunities.

The PM should continue to provide his best in any other capacities as x-presidents do in the US or other countries. there is a lot of challenges at stake in the country any way!!

Befekadu!!

The very question itself is funny?

Why one needs to ask such question while as a general principle a nation’s fate cannot be contingent on a single personality?

Many suggest that Meles should stay in power for some time because there is no competent person to replace him. But if we ask deeper question it will be shown how irrational this argument is. First of all why is that the case that many ppl in the EPRDF circle do not think of a better person? The answer is simple, historically TPLF was a centralised and anti-democratic clique functioning by eliminating (i.e., killing or harassing) or making invisible (suppressing or excluding) any real competitors in Ethiopian politics. This works both at personal and group level. That means the TPLF/EPRDF system by its nature doesn’t allow alternative personalities, views, ideas, groups etc… This line has to be cut if there is a genuine desire for democracy in Ethiopia- Meles has to step down…even today.

Meles can die tomorrow accidently (though it is not my wish) that we must always have a another leader to take over.

Those who suggest that Meles should stay in power reflect upon urself….is it because of ur ethnic affiliation that u r promoting such an idea or there is another suppressed motive?

Hi every body!
I think the Prime Minister, Mr. Meles Zenaiw, should step down only if there is a person who is capable to continue the path Ethiopia has chosen, the path of development, democracy building and the eradication of our worst enemy; poverty. In order to have a continuality of the momentum Ethiopia has had for the last several years, he should continue as a senior adviser to the new prime minister.

Sase Naim, Sweden

To say the least PM Meles is just a born and perfect leader. Who the hell is out there, to compute with him interms of leadership capabilty, dynamism, honesty, genuiness, fairness and forgiveness. Ofcourse, his and ethiopia's enemies won't accept this just because of their own reclesness. The only reason for the Premier to retire from his position should be not because he is outdated and or unable to perform better, every body can tell how progressive himself and his party is getting in handling so much complicated local and external problems. The man has already accumulated unbelievably rich experience.
However, he has to step down willingly this time so he will continue being remembered for lying the smooth power transfer platform in this old nation, like he will be remembered for overwholing the countries economy, dimocracy, diplomacy and countries image. Nevertheless, I have no dought other EPRDF leaders will be able to replace him successfuly as he might have been coaching them in the due course. No hope to find a competetive leader form the oposition camp in next 15-20 years though.
God bless Ethiopia and Meless

hey, why do you see meles as someone irreplaceable?

there are many talented persons to lead ethiopia outa the trouble we are in,huh. it is only b/c there is no forum & freedom that they are't visible. I ofcoures doubt thare is any better candidate within eprdf. come what may,he should step down; thanks for both the good and the bad he's done 4 mum land.

it is also appaling to see people thanking mengistu's time.hey, poeple in the abyss of ignorance of history, pls, mengistu's time is ethiopia's dark age. right!? that doesn't mean approval of meles, but to be fairm meles's regime has been better.(I hate to admit it, anyways, but it's true)nobody knows how this regime would have acted if it faced bold struggles mengistu's regime faced from those precious children of ethiopia (in eyapa -EPRP).

ANYWYAS, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH WITH MELES!

For me Melese has to go full stop why? first he is a human being too he need personal life remember he spent 17 years in a jungle fighting for what he belived second he spent the last 18 years in hard politics i think we have to start to belive in changing command look in America or in England the change leaders not because those leaders are bad but they need new personnew idea new thinking new face who nows what the next person is like Melse is a political leader not Relgious so why not we give him a chance to have a free time common Ethiopians let start to belive in ourselves after Melse left he can share with us his straggule give us some advice what his faoult and good thing why we are slave to a single leader let pass to the new generation to the new era EPRDF must think the future not the past in my belife Melse has to go for personal reason and for our country ETHIOPIA i hope soon i will start to read his BIOGRAPHY

I will say , he should preside for his next term. The political immaturity and recent developements with descendants of kiniget is not yet over and the guy is just doing great. I would say EPRDF ought to elect him as the next prime minster of Federal Republic of Ethiopia.

God bless him and Ethiopia.

Taze

He has already made it clear to all of us that he wants to. He didn't ask for a vote of confidence, which he would have got in masses. It is politically and democratically correct for EPRDF to let him step down from premiership and do his work as a party member. I do not believe he would insist on stepping down from his post without assessing that the party would be hurt without him as a prime minister. As I understand it, had he not been convinced that it would help his party, he wouldn't have insisted. And there is a difference between just wishing and insisting. Let's get more out of him by giving him what he wants. The working people of Ethiopia are very much indebted to him and his party.

Thank you again AIGA!!!For bringing this issue to the forefront.....

First of all, I am the last guy to endorse personality cult,it is not good for democracy. But ,we have a special case regarding PMMZ.
HE IS SUPER COMMUNICATOR FOR DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE TO THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY.
HE IS PROVEN GLOBAL AND CONTINENTAL LEADER.
HE IS FAR SIGHTED AND A GENUIS LEADER RARE IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD.
OUR INSTITIONS OF JUSTICE AND FREEDOM ARE EXTREMELY WEAK AND FRAGILE RIGHT AT THIS MOMENT .WE ARE AT CROSS-ROADS . FOR ALL THIS REASONS AND MORE
PMMZ ....PLEASE FIVE YEARS MORE!!!!!
MAY GOD BLESS ETHIOPIA AND EPRDF..!!!!!!

On the economic and democracy front Meles has done a lot of good deeds. BUT on the all-important Soveriegnity issue, Meles has done more damage to Ethiopia than any of his predecessors! I think that is how Meles will be remembered in history in Ethiopia and in history classes around the world as the first leader in the world to deny his country's history and betray and stand persistantly in international arena against his own country and people.

His resignation is obiviuosly long overdue in the eyes of Ethiopians.

(I know AIGA is not going to post this comment)

Why the Chairman of a party must be the PM of the country? It seems a conflict of interest, that is why Meles Zenawi is unpopular by the Ethiopian public.

EPDRF must revise it's decision of keeping the Chairman of the party to be at the same time the PM of the country.

Meles Zenawi must leave the office of PM for many reasons as stated by many commentators, however it is up to Meles Zenawi's decision to stay in his party and serve in any position, be it Chairman or otherwise.

Once the PM is elected from any party, the PM must be loyal to the state and public not to his party, therefore Prime Ministers must not chair any party.

The unpopularity of Meles Zenawi is because of conflict of interest, otherwise he is a rare breed of high talent and charismatic leader. We miss him if he leaves the office of PM but he must abandon his party unless he is completely tired.

I thank God the almighty and those who made it happen by shedding their blood that we have come to an Era where we can talk in public about whether a leader, who is still in power, should or shouldn't abdicate. My unflinching view is that we have more at stake in Ethiopia today than our desire to experiment with change of a leader. I strongly feel, for the sake of Ethiopia, that this is an unwise experiment at least for the next 5 years. We should not change leaders just because it is a fashionable thing to do. "Ghana has done it,this country has done it,that country has done it why shouldn't we?" This shouldn't be our leading principle. All Ethiopia's leaders had their bad days. All Ethiopians, including those who oppose him, know in their hearts, that PM Meles is doing marvelous things. I have to apologize to His Excellency the PM before I say what I am going to say next:"It is a great deal of irresponsibility on your part to leave now when Ethiopia badly needs you." We have brutal extremists at our door steps and we need a strong leadership,we are facing economic crisis which requires your genius. You may be tired of all the noises: "tyrant, dictator, unpatriotic, etc.". It is only the few, who never hesitate to feed on Ethiopia's dead body that are making this noise. The noise is not louder than the sound of cannon fire that you have been hearing through t out your youth.God bless you and think hard!

I think Melese stay in power at least one term again b/c he has some jobs not done while he was in office 1. the Eritrean case the should allwed to live in Ethiopia as second citizen 2. the Oromo people should done referendom wheather to stay as Ethiopia or be free beacause these and other reasons Melese should stay in Power he is the only courageous leader Ethiopin got
God bless Melese and Ethiopai

the man he serve his country for the last 39 yrs he need peace a nd a good reast he deserve to get some times for his familly an d for him sealf and we want to reed a new book i am expectin that from the pm

I have been consistent in arguing that Prime Minister Meles Zenawi's "use by date" is a long way away. Mind you, this doesn't in any way mean that I am insensitive to the Prime Minister's understandable desire to either spend more time with his family or move on to an international stage where his counsel is in great demand.
The other aspect that we need not lose sight of, is the fact that in politics a leader's tenure of office is dependent on factors such as his role in winning elections, his contribution to maintaining unity amongst the rank and file, his contribution in wooing new members to the party. It is, therefore, against this backdrop, that we weigh the inherent merits and demerits of either retaining or releaving Ato Meles Zenawi from his post both as Prime Minister and Chairman of EPDRF.
There is no doubt in my mind that Ato Meles would pass the test with flying colours. My reasons have in no way under-gone a'plastic surgery'. They are out there for a disspassionate observer to judge for themselves. Meles has been singulary resposible for the transition from a brutal military dictatorship to the paving of democracy which was carried out in an orderly and peaceful manner. Meles' contribution in making of EPDRF an electable party was so enormous that it had reached a stage today that many cannot distinguish EPDRF from Meles. Like the lift man, Meles' role of a unifier had seen many ups and downs, but few can deny his sterling performance in not allowing the TPLF crack of 2001 to mutate from toxic to radio active and scuttle the EPDRF.
As a Prime Minister, Meles had ensured that the nation's stability and security were safe and sound: he has dealt a death blow to Eritrean irredentist ambition by not only repulsing an Eritrean invasion in 2000, but by securing peace with honour in the Treaty of Algiers in 2002; contrary to the expectations of the breast-beatings of Ethiopian Unionists, Ethiopia, today, is a union of free, willing and equal nations, nationalities and peoples of Ethiopia.
It is in the sphere of economics that Meles can join the league of great reformers of Ethiopia. The breathtaking progress is to be witnessed everywhere. Three times more clincs and hospitals now than in 1991, four times more elementary and secondary schools in 17 years than the half-century ago. more roads now than 17 years ago, as well as the quality of life of Ethiopian farmers has changed, and changed radically.
That is why it would be right for citizens to join the "winners don't lose and quitters don't win" chorus.

I am an admirer of meles. While I strongly belive that he stands second to none in his ability as an african leader I think it is time for him to step down.

Hi,

Thanks Aiga for the issue. PM Meles and the leadershp of the EPRDF in general have done thier best. I think he deserve to stay more than one term.
Who else can replace his post Hailu Shawel - Goshu Weldie - Lidetu Ayalew - General Kemal - Andargachew Tsigie hahahahahahah

He shouldn't be a PM in the first place. look what happen to Ethiopia since Meles took over, your best argument is the construction in Addis which most of the time EPRDF members benefit, but the rest of the people never get a chance to eat even three times a day. weather he stapes down or not it doesn't make any different as long as EPRDF is in power if you want a real change let meles go with his gangs and give democracy a chance and Ethiopian a break.

" The great leader is the one who cultivates the next leader."
Evaluating him from this point, he should not leave office. Because he did not do that, moreover, has no mind to do that. All will go to hell together

Why not, I think this is an insult to the people of Ethiopia. The country has has 80 million options to easly replace Meles. Didn't the country survived with out him for the past3000 years(100 years according to him)?
besides Melse is an excellent orator not a visionary leader. Can anyone tell me what Meles's principle is? He is been to all;super communist, Capitalist, Centrist etc .He will be good academician (lecturer).
For the sake of his lovely family and the country , I think it is long overdue him to step down.
The question is will Aiga survive with out him?

[Abe Aiga will always survive with or with out Meles]

He must be relieved of his current post. He might seem irreplaceable, but he had enough oppourtunity to install what ever dreamt to.

I don't share some folks idea that we have to worry about who will be in his foot.

I believe the EPRDF's have the habit of ableing their members on need.

You can see such scenario when the country lost some adept men like Kinfe (deceased ), tsarkan and jebbe (' forced-retirement'). But these key 'vacant' posts are being smoothly run by other specialists.

So my message to the gentle man is to go ahead of his proposal and help witness a history.

We want to see him from his back yard reading and commenting on he government.

Go ahead sir,
maerinet

I am worrying how you are going to live withut him? he is your eye, your nose, your everything. you cannot see, read, think withut him.

Shame to you aiga, racist

[Gezae, why are we racist? and, no, we have our own eyes and noses and everything else....but we sure do respect THE MAN!]

I really admire meles as one of the best ethiopian leaders for years to come, his idea of change brought the best side of our thinking ,what he brought for the change of our mind is greater than what he did for the physical appearance of the country , change will come with any interaction it might be up or down but the creativity mind set is the core root of the change that he brought .
" Imagination is better than knowlege ." I believe his stepping down has educational message and mor beneficial than staying in power. I would kindly ask though to choose the brightest leader for the next generation, and fixed term for prime-ministerial leadership in the federal constitution, it doesn't matter which party win the federal election.
thank you very much aiga for this idea of discussion.

In my book the man and his party has done so much in such a short time to transform Ethiopia from disease , hunger , poverty , war and destruction, to a PEACEFUL , STRONG and progressive Nation . I commend them for a Job Well Done . Should PM Meles stay another term ? It is up to the people to make a judgement and decide based on if Ethiopia and Ethiopians are better off now than they were twenty years ago .. Growing up watching the unmaking of ethiopia and its people, where people that write negatively about what's happening in ethiopia are the same people who use to be ashamed to call themselves Ethiopians because of what Ethiopia was then. So much to be said but like the saying geos... IF IT AIN'T BROKE WHY FIX IT ?
There is peace in the country GOD bless those who made it possible . The peace dividend is paying off , it is there for every one to see.
As for Mr. Meles as the most controversial leader in the history of our nation I will miss him because we will not have any one like Meles to blame and kick around for every thing no matter what he does. Since Ethiopians like to talk he did a good job in opening the Ethiopians mouth wide open so they can utter whatever their little heart desires .
In our part of town we call him MR. ANCHACHAW a man of ACTION which is louder than words and that comes from CONFIDENCE IN THE MAN.
If it was up to me I WILL KEEP HIM another term. WHY NOT ? at least when he talks we know Ethiopia is kicking.
GOOD LUCK ETHIOPIA

He must step down!

He did a lot of mistakes and these must be corrected by him only, so that he has to stay in power to correct all his bad dids. Then we may appreciate his measure to step down. Other wise it seem he finished his mission of destabilizing and dismembering ETHIOPIA.

He should step down.It is overdue. We don't expect a new vision from old prophet....

Akalu

I really admire meles as one of the best ethiopian leaders for years to come, his idea of change brought the best side of our thinking ,what he brought for the change of our mind is greater than what he did for the physical appearance of the country , change will come with any interaction it might be up or down but the creativity mind set is the core root of the change that he brought .

thank you very much aiga for this idea of discussion.

It is not to the national interest of the country for PM Meles to leave office now. But, he has worked hard and needs rest. He never has lived a normal life and the front should not force him to stay. I think he will be sorry to leave the TPLF as liberation front than inclusive democratic political party. The constitution should set a term limit so that leaders have some goals that can be done within the term limit.
God Bless Ethiopia!

I THINK HE SHOULD STAY ONE MORE TERM,B/C THERE IS UNFINISHED BUSINESS ALL OVER ETHIOPIAN LAND. I AM SO LUCKY TO SEE DYNAMIC LEADER IN MY LIFE TIME. IN MY OPIONION YOU SHOULD STAY FIVE MORE YEARS.

GOD BELSS ETHIOPIA AND PM MELES ZENAWI

I think the man himself said "A party that depends entirely on a single person is not a party at all..." or something to that effect.
EPRDF is not about a person... but a realistic vision. For as long as the views are upheld, who cares sits at the helm of the party?

It is a noble idea to discuss on this issue.
As a single citizen, he has contributed all what he has to do to Ethiopia that I and the majority of Ethiopians couldn’t think and dream of. I believe that the great majority of Ethiopians have to say thank you for his valuable and irreplaceable contributions he has made in his lifetime as a fighter as well as a PM.
It is the decision of both the party and PM Meles on whether to continue the coming term in office or not as what the PM has explained. But what I would like to mention is the weight of the current agendas that the country is dealing with should be given priority in front of the party and the PM himself before deciding on his leave of office. The second issue that they have to consider is the preparations made on the possible successor not only to replace the PM but to fulfill the succession plan that the party has set in its congress. Based on the above facts, the PM has to stay in office only for the coming term in office.
I believe that My country will move forward with the modern thinking of the EPRDF and this line of thinking will prevail within our land!

PM Mele is one the best peron ever seens the country have. He intellegent hard working visioner, confident, committed dedicated... so I wish he to stay in power atlest for one term. He should not step down at this time for the country. But as an individaul he could be exhosted. As to my understanding the country needs him and he has to stay in power.

God bless him and God Bless Ethiopia

It is a well known secret that EPRDF/TPLF will hang on to power by any means necessary like many other dictatorial regimes in Africa. There is not much left in the opposition camp and EPRDF/TPLF would ensure its supremacy through either systematic manipulation, or if it gets out of hand, through a barrel of a gun.

Please, let’s not kid ourselves. The political, economic, and military power is in the hands of TPLF elite, who are the writers of the constitution, makers of the law, owners of a huge business conglomerate, the top commanders of the military establishment, and the directors of the most sophisticated secret service in the continent. Let’s not fantasize about democratization process in Ethiopia. EPRDF/TPLF is here to stay until the party decays and disintegrates through self-destruction.

PM Meles is a unique leader that Ethiopia ever had. This truth is acceptable for those who have genuine mind and realists. Not for those who are living in illusion and spread there illusion out of hate. But My opinion is not concerning so mach on the leadership only.. My double question is, If he step down Is he able to have a key post in his party to over ran the Politics and also to bring forward the Business world , Commerce and Industry which through his Leadership Started ? In his Leadership he started so mach marvellous things which are visible and tangible. These things must achieve there goal. In my opinion EPRDF through straggle at the present time have firm and stable democratic base. If it is so I think it will be even the PM personal wish to give up his Post. Because, he knows That post is not for the matter of Leadership and have such high position Instead of that to bring P Ministerial performance. Our land also must experience and see this part of democratic process.

Shame on us and Shame on you Aiga. First you didn't post my comment last time on Sibhat Nega because of I was speaking the truth. Here again I will speak the truth see if you are going to post it.

Coming to TPLF/EPRDF leadership are we saying everything is done because of PM Meles Zenawi? Even Meles told us so many times that it is always majority decision. I believe he has a big contribution in it but why are you guys almost worshiping him. In his leadership lots of people commented only on the positive side. What about the mistake has been done by his leadership. Are we forgetting the innocent Tigrians who massacred by Shabiya because of the poor leadership of meles. Shabiya was preparing all along to invade Ethiopia and the PM office had the report on hand but no action taken. As a result we seen what happen under the PM watch. Our people were pray for Shabiya tanks. Do we know how many people died because of the PM poor leadership?
Furthermore, are we judging the so-called Meles group are rewriting history? Aiga has been trashing the heroes and heroines who spent their life for development we are bragging for. Particularly Aiga has been trashing and defaming the name of Aregash, Gebru, Siye and many other for the work they have done for the people of Tigray only because of they differ from Meles. Aiga and others we should put everything as it is - the good and the bad if we are with the people not individuals.
It is time Meles MUST stepdown unless it will be the same like Mengistu and Hailesillasie.
It is time for new leadership and vision.
BUT personally I don't believe he will step down. I will put my money on him.

We will not be discussing this issue if there was a TERM LIMIT in the constitution. I hope PM Melese will work to change that before he lives.

Yes he should stepdown if he wants Ethiopia to prosper. But I doubt that he had a good intention for Ethiopia. We will be told he was forced to saty!! He would be a man of honor if he steps down regardless of his party needs!!!

PM Meles can make history for himself and the country by being the first Ethiopian leader who transfered power peacefully.

He has repeatdely said this his last term in office (including to Joanatn Dimbeleby) If he changes his mind again, no world leader will take him seriously. This the time of peace for Ethiopia and his leaving of office will not appear as a forced one. But if he waits any longer and the country comes under all kinds of termoil (including armed groups gradualy gaining ground), his resignation will appear as a forced one.

But I ask one thing the PM to fulfil. For the sake of the country help to devlop and strengthen sensible and responsible oppostion parties before you leave office perhaps in 2 years from now.

Regards,

The more things change the more they remain the same. Fix not if it ain't broke. Meles is the ocean why look for an aquarium?

In my opinion Meles should stay in power for the following reasons:

It takes a leader some years of experience before he/she starts leading effectively and smoothly minimizing both political and economic blunder. Meles is at his best politically, popularity, physically, and global reputation. Our country cannot afford to miss this opportunity for some one who definitely will need on the job training wasting precious years of development and risking national security into the hands of our natural enemies and confused members of the society. Meles is at his prime time and he should be given a chance to maximize his output.

Melese should resign on his terms. It is not a matter of public opinion. Melese resignation should be discuss if ther is a wrong doing in his part and his party should ask him to leave office based on the part's future. My understanding is that the oppistion and some media elites put the idiea on the air and Meelese resignation has been faned ,twisted and distorted for polatical gain. If the public wqants him to be pm the elaction will give the green what step the pm should take.Until then the pm shoud focus on on thing which is to lead the country. We issues.like Somalia, Ertria the nile and ASSAB(Which is going to frame the next election who ever has a strong stand about assab will win the next election)

The Prime Minister has done an exceptional leadership for his country. It is undeniable he has the intellectual and ability to lead a nation of over 85 nation and nationality in peace. Ethiopia is in the process to become prospering country in Africa under the leadership of EPRDF/Meles Zenawi. In deed Ethiopia deserves a leader who can dedicate his effort and energy to improve the life of ordinary people into a better life; I think the prime minister has just done that. The majority of Ethiopians are grateful to have him as their leader, a leader who is free of corruption and favoritism over ethnicity, no state or kilil is treated differently than any other state. I think this kind off leadership is rare in Africa let alone in Ethiopia. Mister Prime Minister thank you for your equality to all Ethiopians as one country it is unusual to have such a leader History would remember you as a great leader who pave the road to a prosperous Ethiopia. Unlike his predecessors which they put the country in a deep debt, and shame, Ethiopia is known as a famine with skeleton people.

Probably you people are thinking I am requesting the prime minister to stay in power for five more years. Right? I am grateful for what he has done, however it is time for him to leave office and become adviser to the party. Perhaps it sounds bitter and unwise to ask a visionary leader to step down from what he does best enthusiastically; however, Ethiopia will benefit much more if there is a habit of peaceful transition of power. He has been in power for too long. If a leader stays in power without a limit then good ideas change into greed. The prime minister has not showed any kind of greed, actually it is the contrary. Remember when he was awarded $200,000 in Europe some years ago and he donated all off it to charity. I just wanted to be clear on that. Mr. prime minister if you step down as a prime minister peacefully then perhaps history would remember you as a George Washington. Here is why, you would be the first leader in modern Ethiopia history to transfer power peacefully, as far as I know. Also it is time for you to write about the struggles history/documents and most importantly to spend some quality time with your family. The PM has work very hard for the Ethiopian people and it is time for him to sit and enjoy life as ordinary citizen.

It is my hope and it should be everyone’s hope that EPRDF has a leader to work as hard as PM Meles Zenawi is. I wish the prime minister the best life after leaving office and prosperous Ethiopia.

Again it is my gratitude to have a leader who works hard for better Ethiopia and its citizens.

During these last eighteen years, in my view, about Ethiopia People Revoluationary Democratic Front EPRDF. That has organized the importance of strong states and local governments in our Federalsystem in Ethiopia has done a lot. If you take clos look, our country has changed from poor country to the rich country in Africa. We got development we need for 100 years. Our economic grows 10% than befor. Our Federal government considered all it citizens not like provous government. I think mindless people are only those who wish PM Melse to leave because they want to put our country back to the old school thier parent had gone throught. And they want to bring distruction a gain into country or nation. I strongly disagree with with folks who wish PM meles to leave for baseless things. PM Meles would not leave power untill 20015. I wish PM Meles to all citizens in Ethiopia without doubts for what he have done for the country since EPRDF over thrown dictator governmanr in 1991. PM Meles have done many good things for all of us. And wish him to raise up or lift up all African children leave alone Ethiopian children. He should stay in the power for many years to come.
Long live PM Melese.

Hi Aiga
The majority of Ethiopia knows, that PM Meles has changed the country, has done his best to bring the country to its feet,We can
say economically,Politically and diplomatically what democracy, peace and development.I believe that the decision is up to his party.
Got bless EPRDF
Got bless the Country.

Meles Zenawi can be characterized by
1. The greatest Ethiopian Leader that has come to lead the Ethiopian Revolution to victory and started to build Ethiopia with hope and dignity among its people.
2. He is a man of vision not only for Ethiopia but other countries of the horn such as Eritrea, Dgubuti, the Sudan, Somalia, Kenya and beyond ... the entire African Continent.
3. He was an outstanding student at the HSIU unlike his enemies the drop outs of the HSIU.
4. I can keep on adding more and more ...

This time (his middle ages) he should work on training young Mele's so the EPRDF will prosper and the rest will learn from him.
5. He is more than qulified to stay in power; but it is time for him to bring other Meles's.
6. It should be clear to the friends and enemies of Ethiopia that this man is still the best for the job.
7. But for Democracy to grow in the horn of Africa and elsewhere, He should be able to show us that he has produced people that can do the remaining job of the Great EPRDF.

Glory to EPRDF.

Let me ask you one question, how many countries get a leader like Meles and how often?
You don't have to go too far, just look arround your neighbours.
Many times people who leave in the US and Europe, just because they are from Ethiopia, have been trying to influence the political decisions in that country.
I think it is wrong.
Now what I hear is no different, they want Meles out. It takes a long time to replace a leader like him in a country like Ethiopia.

Our PM has work so hard for Ethiopian and some appricate him and some don't but i personally think that you did a wonderful job and you have represented the Tigrian ethiopian well. thanks and God bless you . but it is time for you to enjoy life with your family and see yourself outside poltics, perhaps writing ethiopian history or teaching will be a suggestion. but all that is up to you. if you feel like you got to rule .. go for it solider& Great job PM ! don't worry about the haters aboard you have lots of fan who love you & admire you
may peace and love be with you and family.
God bless ethiopia and Ethiopian

Just ///// more years and Ethiopia will set you free!

PM Meles Zenawi is at the peak of his leadership and Ethiopia needs him to stay. Due to the complexity of our previous politics, it took time and hard work to receive the regognation and appreciation he deserved, but with patient and intellegence, he won the love, admiration, and respect of his people. The parts of the puzzle are finally merging and fitting in beautifully and peacefully. He is not only Ethiopia's leader but the whole Africa's leader. We, Ethiopians love him. We, Africans and the world admire him! He is a man of peace, which we desparately need to maintain! He is a man of action, which we desperately need someone that leades by example! And he is a man of deep mind and experience, which the job highly demands! With the brave men and women beside him, he has translated the sacrifies of our fathers, mothers, sisters, and brothers into reality! Yet, the plant of our democracy is too young and we need the same gardner to take care of it until it is rooted enough to withstand and survive any wind. We can't afford the risk of a new gardner on the job, we can't afford an accident of putting acid water on this hishel/young plant.

So, I say Your Honor, PM Meles, just one more term: Just ///// more years and the Ethiopian people will set you free to pursue your other wishes.
Yes, we understand, the load on you and you deserve a break but Ethiopia is demanding your continous gift.
We are honored to have you as our leader
Ethiopia is blessed to have a Son that loves Her more than he loved his precious life!
God is so pleased for using the mind he gave you to help humanity!
We are so blessed to have such a leader as our role model figure!
History is already made!
You will live forever and ever in every generations mind!
Because you chose to give instead of receive
Just FIVE more years!
and Ethiopia will set you free to live as you wish!

Thank you for the opportunity Aiga!
I have two strong feelings in this matter;
1)I would like to see apeacefull transformation of power in Ethiopia. In this regared,I would like that the Pm to resign.
2)I think it is not the real time to resign for meles.look we are surrownded by three unstable nighbers(eritrea,Sudan&Somali).we know that the regim in Eritrea has alarge plan to dismantle Ethiopia in to many states for this reason he organized Olf,ONLF,CUDP and now organizing G7.In this difficult time we need abrillint leader who can deal with all fronts.(Politically, diplomaticallyand Economicaly)To save the country from disintegration.I deeply believe in PM Meles that he has such ablity and think that Meles should not step down In this moment.

I don't have much of a liking to the EPRDFs, but in all fairness and disregarding my personal taste and political outlooks, i think It will be very unwise for ALL ETHIOPIANS to stumble upon the ongoing process of transforming the country, especially at times of a momentous peak like now.
The Prime Minister as we all know, happens to be at the center of all the forward looking dynamic building forces. Why then should we ETHIOPIANS be cognizant of this fact and allow/persuade the Prime Minister to stay for 5 more years ? The PM should not be a quitter especially at a time of the height of his peak performance either !

Hi every body,
I really do appreciate Mr.Meles’ struggle for Ethiopia’s sustainable development in every sense, but I think that a leadership over two decades is too much for him as a person and it's not conductive to democracy.

EPRDF has a lot of qualified politicians who are able to do a good job. Meles hopefully works in another influential position so that he can help Ethiopia to overcome poverty.

God bless Meles and his family.

It is clear that EPRDF is misunderstood by many. The party rules collectively and the strength of the party is not one man. This is not to diminish Meles's contribution. If EPRDF is one-man party, I don't think it could have achieved a lot including, as someone said 'creating a stable country in the horn of africa'. Let's not forget TPLF was formed with little contribution from Meles.

PM Meles must not stepdown at this particular momment

Teh reason is the Eritrean problem is not completly solved, the Somali situation is still hot und can be dangerous for the entire Horn of Afrika. That means the mad man in Eritrea will be able to acomplish his wishes. this is one thing. The other reaso that PM Meles should not step down is at this time he is the most respeckted man in the entire world ie. he is expected to do more for the entire continent. wemust give him a chance to run the next term even beg him to run the next term.

PM Meles is intlligent enough to be elected as the next OAU General Sec. and I am also a dreamer thathe can also be elected as next UN General Sec. I am a strong beleaver that he is entirly fit for those posts. As a conclusion the People of Ethiopia need PM Meles more than the OAU and UN.

If I were PM Meles, I will step down honorably now in peace time than wait for bad times.

The value of your rezigination will not be much appreciated or noticed if you wait longer time and if you try to do it in bad times (like in intensified war or hunger times).

But I will ask you, PM Meles, to do the follwing 3 things before you leave office for good:

1. Support responsible and democtartic Ethiopian oppostion parties to develop (in many ways, financial technical support, training etc). Some of them now are not democratic even to eachother and they will slice eachother later if you don't help the process of democratization now. We want you to leave us a country, not a slicing ground like Somalia. The people of Ethiopia will blame you forever if you leave them a troubled land behind.

2.Help to develop a responsible private Press and Media in the country. A mature media will be a good public watch dog for future governments. There are already encouraging signs of independent and responsible media emerging in Ethiopia and this will be one of your success stories in the future. No Ethiopian leader has done this in the past.

3. Declare the Algers agreement as being null and void and find ways for Ethiopia to regain its acces to the sea-Assab port. This has been one of your leadership deficits in the past and you need to correct it before you leave office.

PM Meles, You have done a lot for your country in the development field, but carrying out the above 3 major tasks will complete your successful journey in history.

Regards,
Tesfai

Dear Aiga,
Look, if you are really sincere in what you do? you need to post the negatives of Meles Zenawi. Posting lies will not benefit anyone.

I see most of the posting say Meles did this and that.

I oppose all these and say Meles must be step down. It is actually too late for him. He has been almost 20 years in Arat Kilo? If you keep something in one place with no making it move, it will rot or corrode or burrowed by something and become useless.

What we have in Ethiopia is just no use.

I personally do not care if Meles stays at kilo for 1000 years. My problem with him is that he is not competent. He has no the capability to lead Ethiopia. Do not tell me he is capable and it is because he is capable he is still ruling. It is not true.

Meles is still ruling after eliminating everyone who challenge him either by killing or by chasing, or imprisoning or forced retiring. We are only talking about him because he does not allow anyone to standout above him.

As such, he must step down for the following reasons:

1. Land-locking 80 million people stupidily and even he still does not get it. And all the consequences of land-locking which amounts Ethiopia has spend about 60 billion dollars so far for port services from Eritrea, Djibouti, Sudan and Kenay.

2. He betrayed Ethiopia by betraying his 100,000 soldiers in the battle field

3. He handed Ethiopia to the mercy of the west by taking it to the hague

4. By having article 39 for sake of Eritreas departure from Ethiopia, he has created a big problem. As we know Artilcle 39 only served Eritrean, not other Ethiopian can use it. If that was the case we would not have the fighting front in Ogaden

5. He does not work with people. He does not know team work and that is why he has been working all alone for the past 18 years. Please do not tell me about the Roads, Universities, and others, even if without him, Ethiopia could achieve more than that. Ethiopians are not dead people in his absence.

6. He never ever correct mistakes in his life. He never ever learn. He is self-rightous like the Ethiopian oppositions parties. This is not only his problem, this is a general Ethiopian problem. In most cases Ethiopians never admit mistakes and that is even the main problem that we never solve our problems all the time. We never admit mistakes. We never learn from mistakes because everything we do is always even when we are wrong. This the problem Ethiopians recycling mistakes all the time. That is why we never solve our food security problem.

8. Meles is not innovative. He is a parasite; He believes in begging. Meles can never be an entrepreneur. He may become an employee to someone but he can never be his own boss. He has no clue if he can make money without begging money.

8. He also does not respect Ethiopian culture. He likes to copy everything from outside. For instance, when he wrote the beginning of the end, check his bibliography, he never looked into an Ethiopian indigenous wisdom of administration or development. All what he did he just tried to copy from Taiwan, China, Europe, and others. There is no anything from Ethiopia. He is brain-washed like Issayas. Issayas thinks he can civilize by eating Italian pasta, mocoroni, and bani, Meles does the same. He think he can civilize by immiating everything from outside. Many the problems in Ethiopia can be solved using cheaply availabe local tools without begging money. Meles has to have alot of money to make things work. For Meles the main tool is money. He cannot work without money. That mentality is a big problem. I do not think that is going to change any time in the near future.

9. He cannot work with all Ethiopians because his thinking or policy or ideology is antagonistic with what Ethiopians want and feel. I will never work with Meles even if he pays me trillion dollars a month because he ideology is does not make me proud Ethiopian. His ideology is antiethiopia.

He may have a good intention to help Ethiopia. However the way he think and does things is wrong and antiEthiopian sentiment.

No matter how clever he thinks, he can never succeed if he works all alone. If he was working with all Ethiopian for past 18 years and if he was accomodating other ideas; Ethiopian problem could have been done long ago. Although he thinks he has done alot;he has done so little in the past 18 years. If I was not in his position, I would be embarrassed honeslty. He is not capable.

10. Meles does not care about his audiences too. Meles hurts Ethiopians when he speaks. He mixes english and amharic when addressing public forums or public speeches. This is wrong. What is good mixing in English in amharic or Tigrignea. I know according to him it is a sign of civilization. But for one to civilize, one does not have to mix langauges and confuse his audiences.

Now what to be done:

1. Meles must step down peacefully and go to Tigray and do a big farm and take holidays, travel to all over the world. I know farming in Ethiopia is for the uncivilized, but it is wrong. That is why Ethiopia is backward.

2. Let us elect someone who can work with all Ethiopians and who can listen and do all what Ethiopians want, not one persons idea, but all Ethioians ideas pooled together. Let us have a leader who doe not does respect Ethiopiaan and Ethiopians. Let us have a leader who does not believe Ethiopia have to be land-locked. Let us have a leader who rely on Ethiopian than on NGOS. Let us have a leader who tears down the mistrust and suspicion among Ethiopians. Let us have a leader who mobilize the people from north to south to work hard to eliminate poverty than Meles who beg day in and day out for money donation from every country.

If there is no anyone; let me succeeed Meles I know what to do.

I will do the followings;

1. Motivate Ethiopians to work 24 hours to be on the top of poverty, not by begging money, but enthusiasm and motivation. I do beieve nothing is impossible. I believe I can tear down all the mistrust , suspicion, biase, prejudice, tribalism, ethnicism, alytims, nepotism, and can motivate Ethiopian to work with flaming enthusiam.

What is a leader who rely on food aid every year? what is this leader who beg money every day? such leader cannot solve problem.

EPRDF as a whole is a party that is dynamic, progressing through time and will continue to prgress. This is not only because of Meles or the leadership. So many were sacrificed for it and are ready to promte the vision. Vision to see Ethiopia (a country with diversified cultures and langauges) dveloped not in words but in deeds. That is why, we see that Ethiopia is at the fore front of those countries which are making efforts to develop. IN order to continue in the same truck Ethiopia should follow a Developmental state path which is similar to the chinese NDR, which is a pre-cusrsor of the current Chinese development. Having said that, the current Ethiopian constitution is a parlamentary democracy. A parlamentary democracy have nothing to do with individuals term as long as the party wins it will gevern, so no ammendment until the country reachs at some level. we never know when, let's leave that for the furture generation. When we come to the party, there is a saying, 'chew lerasih sitil taft alabeleziya dingay new bilew yitiluhaul'. So, in my opinion, as a supporter of EPRDF, EPRDF knows about Meles's replacement long ahead before the begining of the media sensation. The front knows the time when to limit the term of the leadership. They are leading the country with consensus. Meles is a leader who listens to all ideas but not who imposes his own idea.

I like Meles he has done an excellent job. I like him to stay a little longer. Since Ethiopia is ruled under a parliamentary system, the party who won elects the prime minster. Hence, if Eprdf wins I accept what Eprdf puts as PM. I like Meles not only because his quality as leader but also his moral standing and his trust of people in particular the Ethiopian people. He is a fine and great human. He fantastically articulates the need of Ethiopian people and knows how to translate to reality. Meles stay for while

Prime Minister Meles Zenawi is unmatched leader Africa has ever had. PM Meles has brought the fractured country to the functional and admirable state. A lot has been done a lot remains to be done. Ethiopia is witnessing further than a glimmer of hope thanks to the policy of EPRDF and the well organized system of the PM leadership. PM Meles needs to carry on till the country rejoices full fledged democracy.

PM Meles Zenawi I think should step down. Not because he has failed on the job that he does or will fail going forward but to allow him get the break that he and his family very well deserves.

In my opinion, he has done an implacable job and more than his share for our country. The challenge becomes, will these that would replace him maintain the relative peace and stability while leading the country to an economic prosperity and within the path that I is on? In my view, PM Zenawi is one of those, one may categorize as born before their time.. The guy is a visionary... he just does not have folks around him that have the same vision - Him and himself alone can not do everything... he needs help. I think if he does not take a break, he will burn out.... at times, I feel sorry for the guy because everyone is simply selfish... You can sense a sign of burn out with his impatience with journalists (especially those that are ignorant and antagonistic who ask silly or pointless questions).
I don't think anyone of us understand this guy - rather, we misconstrued his work as that is the easiest thing to do…. The great poet Waldo says, “Is it so bad to be misunderstood? Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh.” I will add PM Zenawi in to this…. Only history and Historians will judge his work few years from now…. Just pray, the country does not fall in to some lunatic and anarchy, but “waa”, don’t ever under estimate the blood of those who died for the country and those that are its true protectors…. PM Zenawi himself won’t see it go in vein even if he resigns.

This topic is very important...HIS honor PRIME MINISTER MELLES ZENAWI IS NOT RESIGHING .HE IS NOT RUNNING FOR THE NEXT ELECTION. RESIGHING IS WHEN QUIT YOUR JOB BEFORE YOUR YOUR TERM.
I HOPE AIGA WILL CORRECT THIS TOPIC.
Having said that we know that the whole party is resposible for any success or failure for that matter. It is a collective leadreship, this should be understood very clearely.
His excellnecy PM melles has been the face of EPRDF for so long, some people confuse him as if he is the only leader in the party.
dear cyber-readers:
We are at very crucial moment in our history. We at cross-roads right now .Our institutions of freedom and justice are very very weak and fragile. There is no national consences between the opposition partis and the ruling party.
PM Melles is one of the certified developmetal experts in the whole world.
THE EXPERTS ON THE FIELD SUCH AS JEFFERY SACHS OF THE U.N. HAVE REPEATDELY PRAISED THE PM MELLES ON FIGHTING POVERTY. BESIDES, THE NOBLE PRIZE WINNER ON ECONOMICS JOSEPH STIGLIZ HAS TREMENDES PROFFOSTIOAL HIGH REGARD FOR PM MELLES.
FOR THESE AND MANY MANY OTHERS REASONS ...PLEASE ,STAY FIVE MORE YEARS , FIVE MORE YEARS .
GOD BLESS ETHIOPIA AND EPRDF

Dear Aiga,
Won't be these comments be interseting if you had prepared a polling system that goes with this to gauge the what majority want to see.

I tried to count for myself and i think the "he should quit" sayers are leading.

thanks, anyways

Yes Meles has to step down. The idea of one man rule is totally wrong. To remind you, two decade ago, Mengestu H/Mariam was considered by some as indispensable leader (to the contrary to others). Do not even think that Meles was elected by Democratic means. Anyone who has stayed in power for two decade is absolutely dictator.

Dear Aiga.
Pm Meles must have a chance for the next Term. Not only EPRDF but the emtire peoples of Ethiopia must request him even beg him to accept and run the next Term. Simlply because he is the only copetent African Stateman in this Time. It is now well known that he is the sole representative of the eitire continent. Now the Ethiopian peoples und also the EPRDF have only one chance , ie. not to let him Step down.

Pm Meles drove Ethiopia 100 years forwards in only 15 years period of time . So has no Statesman of any country did . A Commentataor wrote that ( he made ETHIOPIA lANDLOCKED ). The reality is once upon a time he trusted the MAD MAN IN Eritrea and was his biggest mistake ever But do we not make mistakes or do you at all thinks that the Eritreans are satisfied by the dicision of the MAD MAN in Eritrea . As a coculusin. If PM Meles steps down either by his own will or the Peoples of Ethiopa he will alwas have the best job he wishes either in OAU or UN. Taht I am deadly sure. by the way I am Eritrean not a follower of th MAM MAM or the so called Opositioners. just a Free man In EUROPE.

Thank you for having my Idea.

Must step down, cos there must be a limited time to any body to serv in the office, other wise dictatorial behaviour will come and the person feels superior.

His administration gave lots of positive changes to our lives. However, I believe that there are certain dark spots in his legacy, that he must be given the opportunity to redress. First, he has been determined to institute democratic system in Ethiopia. Obviously, he vigourously pushed for it till election 2005. We all know the trend since then. I want him to get the chance to push for vibrant democracy once more. In EPRDF's own admission, the party was not prepared last time, which partly contributed to the chaos. EPRDF has corrected its mistakes now, as it claims. Thus, let us get the chance for free and fair election one more time. The upcoming one is not it, obviously, as the opposition is in shamble. By they way, the killings of the demonstrators following the turmoil is one of the dark moments in his administration. I believe that PM should hung on to power for one more time to redress these negative images. Push for free and fair election one more time (in 2015) and also offer an apology to the families of the victims. I think PM should take steps towards offering modest compensations to the families of the victims.

The second dark spot is that although EPRDF is set out to bring the historically oppressed nations out of the dark, the conflict between the OLF and EPRDF meant that oromos were disproportionately persecuted under the PM's leadership. This was unfortunate given that oromos expected better days under EPRDF, given the history of discrimination in the nation. I think EPRDF and OLF should come to terms under PM's leadership to change this history of animosity. On the other hand, PM's leadership has been characterized by disproportionate power control by Tigray people. It is undeniable that the military leadership, the security apparatus, and the key government posts were all controlled by TPLF. I believe that PM meles should hung on to power to correct all these dark spots on his otherwise amazing leadership. It would be a disaster for PM to pass on the position to another TPLF member (after TPLF total dominance for 18 years) which signals TPLF's dominance would perpetuate so long as the EPRDF leads Ethiopia. He has to show us that the dominance of TPLF is simply an outcome of unintended historical coincidence, as some of us would like to believe, rather than a systematic and well orchestrated actions by the PM. Unfortunately, the other EPRDF memeber parties don't seem to have a member qualified enough to replace the PM so that the most likely scenario would be for another TPLF member to become the PM. Many of use would hate to see that!! I want him to stay in power for one more term to convince us that he was not a racist!

I know some people praise PM Meles to step-down. But most people are not accepting those ideas and they wish PM Melse for another term. I cannot blame those who say that, because I know and learn it is African traditions or system or their stupid believes. African people in general do not like a person who does good things for his own people like PM Meles. In my point of view, I wish PM Meles to run for another term like most people wish him to run again. God bless Ethiopia

He has to stepdown. He is not a KING after all. Also I don't believe that he is the only person who deserves the position in ETHIOPIA. What he did for or to the country is evident which history will tell us one day in addition to what we have witnessed.

"Africa needs strong institutions, not strong men"....the right lesson for present and would be African leaders.

Ghana had suceesive leaders who put it marvelously growning in economy (no parallel in Africa), marvelously exercising democracy, and most of all elected in clear public vote...without fraud and stealing.Yet all stepped down when defeated in poll that they arranged to be free and honest before themselves and God!And by the way the leaders are also not too proud to depend on their carnal thought, they depend on God. I think our PM has to step down, given Ethiopia has many young people of the personality and capability to build high quality institutions to serve their country effectively, still free from self or ethnic favouritism and corruption.
