OPPOSITIONS’ AND SUPPORTERS’ ENDLESS SMEAR CAMPAIGNS

PART 7

By Mathza

Most of the oppositions’ leadership and their handful supporters, particularly the minuscule vociferous Diaspora, and some individuals obsessed with lust for power and hatred against Prime Minister Meles Zenawi have been and are doing anything to get rid of him, the TPLF and the EPRDF. They are intimidated and demoralized by his intelligence, capability, competence and the respect he commands in the international community. Their hatred is limitless. In their obsession and desperation to snatch power, they have crossed the line of treason by compromising and endangering the sovereignty, security, territorial integrity and national interests of Ethiopia. The following are examples supporting this statement:

They condemn Ethiopia’s defense against jihadists;

They praise, congratulate, defend, encourage and support—instead of denouncing—the atrocities committed by separatists and jihadists;

They condemn Ethiopia’s reaction to such atrocities;

They collaborate and scheme with the Eritrean government which has been and is trying hard to destabilize and disintegrate Ethiopia;

They belittle EPRDF's sound government policies and strategies, which have proved successful;

They deny and ridicule the double-digit economic growth, a remarkable progress and performance in socio-economic development in the last five years; and

They unashamedly accuse the Prime Minister of being a stooge of developed countries because of, among others, his success to mobilize foreign assistance (For example: by not giving in to pressure from such countries to allow foreign banks to operate in Ethiopia he not only shielded the development of local banks but also saved the country from the devastating impact of the current global financial crisis).

In short, these hate-mongers and anti-Ethiopia elements do not care at all about Ethiopia and Ethiopians. Their only desire is to be in power by any means—in the driver’s seat—without any concern on how that might impact Ethiopia and its people, enie kemotku serdo aybqel.

One of their tactics is a negative smear campaign portraying the country's image and, in particular, it’s dedicated Prime Minister with all kinds of monstrous adjectives and pictures. Among the methods used include politicizing everything, outrageous allegations, lies, exaggerations, wild generalizations, spinning, misinterpretation and spreading rumors. Practically all of the writings of these-diehards are replete of despicable descriptions and character assassinations, all intended purely to bring down the government. This writing ferrets out examples of statements that do not make any sense, are illogical, are concocted, or are not supported by facts—purely intended to misinform and mislead readers, particularly the Diaspora silent majority. It is a modest attempt to expose those bigots who have been hoodwinking and continue to hoodwink the Ethiopians and the international community. (In the future, there will be a series of matrixes like the one below, each preceded by the current two paragraphs).

Author’s Statement

My Comments

1. Assassinating dictators is a legitimate cause - Tecola Hagos, Ethiopianreview.com, January 7th, 2009

…the generations [the young Ethiopian men and women], since then [1960s and 70s], of the 1980s and 90s are ashes when compared to the firebrand previous generations mentioned above.

Thus, I am very much aware of the fact that my advocacy of tyrannicide is neither a popular nor an enlightened one—but an effective and a moral one.

Rather than spending millions of dollars and years of hard work creating, training and leading freedom fighters, it will take only a fraction of that to train highly committed, fast moving and highly motivated vanguard fighters to send on such type of mission of mercy.

(Tecola Hagos is a former legal adviser to Ethiopia's tyrant Meles Zenawi. He currently resides in Boston, USA. The article was originally published by Ethiopian Review in September 1997.)

The statemant on the left implies that the youthful Ethiopian men and women of the 1980s and 1990s generation should have followed the example of those of the 1960s and 1970s. One could safely assume that the current young generation (2000s) would have been included had this writing been done at present instead of 1997. In any case, although there is no direct reference to PM Meles Zenawi in the article, there is no doubt that the writer had him in mind. If the PM was not the target of his “mission of mercy” why did he go to the trouble of wasting his and the readers’ time writing such an article?

The writer is right in admitting that the tyrannicide he advocates is and cannot be “neither a popular nor an enlightened one” among normal people. This is mainly so in regard to the PM. What has he done to be the subject of assassination? As all humans are susceptible to err, he may have made mistakes as those who act are prone to do so. His good deeds, however, immensely outweigh his shortcomings. Despite demonization by some vocal individuals (like the writer) and oppositions, the public is increasingly appreciating his maintenance of peace and security against all odds, his keeping the unity of the country intact against all odds, his policies and strategies and their executions, his capability in mobilizing foreign assistance, and the commendable socio-economic development that the country registered and is registering.

As a former legal advisor to the PM, did the writer experience something that permanently wounded his ego resulting in fathomless hatred against the PM?

2. Open letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, by Dr. Golto Aila, ethiomedia.com, January 23, 2009

I hope 18 years after his rule in Ethiopia and the devastation that his rule has caused and the catastrophic inter- and intra-ethnic tension his rule has created will give those of you who will deal with him in the coming days, weeks and months (hopefully not years) a critical look at Meles.

…it is time to help the people of Ethiopia get from this yoke of oppression! And the way to do it is by demanding all the opposition party to come together and form a non-partisan coalition and support such a coalition with the view of forming an Administration of National Unity.

What is the matter with those with “Dr. or PhD” attached to their names? The accusation that the MP’s rule caused devastation in Ethiopia is outrageous. Does the writer really believe that Mrs. Clinton will buy it? If he does he is a fool.

The writer also alleges that the PM’s rule has created “catastrophic inter- and intra-ethnic tension.” Whatever tensions there have been and will be in the future is not the making of the PM. The following quotation from my OPPOSITIONS DURING EPRDF ETHIOPIA: POLITICS AND DEMOCRACY of 2004 disproves the allegation:Flaring-up of feuds between neighboring tribes/clans and ethnic clashes, particularly between nomadic communities (some manipulated and fueled by oppositions and separatists themselves) are, for example, presented as something unusual, the creation of the present government and the result of ethnic federalism. These incidents are not peculiar to Ethiopia; they have been happening and continue to happen in neighboring countries. With drought, a matter of life and death, there is nothing to prevent pastoralists from crossing borders to grazing and watering areas whether the borders are ethnic borders or not. In the few cases where interstate boundaries were contested the boundaries were delimited with the intervention of the Council of Federation.”

He pleads Mrs. Clinton to demand opposition parties to form a coalition. By doing so he is admitting that the oppositions are useless, incompetent and undemocratic. In other words, they are incapable of organizing themselves and obviously not fit to take the responsibility of administering the country. What a travesty! I think his pleading will have the opposite effect on Mrs. Clinton. To his and his likes chagrin a US government official said the new US administration is “ready to forge existing ties with Ethiopia.”

3. Open letter to President Barack Obama, by Professor Seyoum Gelaye, ethiomedia.com, January 23, 2009

The regime… is squandering the Nation’s resources on unsustainable agricultural programs (Commercial Flower Production and Bio-diesel-Crop production)…

 …Tigri Nation…(The home-base of Melese Zenawe, PM) with a population of less than 3,000,000…have also formed the Rehabilitation Society of Tigri (REST) to control and eventually replace international NGO’s.

The open letter is full of a litany of lies and exaggerations. The writer has done great service to the incumbent government and disservice to his cause. The US Embassy in Addis Ababa and the State Department know very well the facts and actual situation in Ethiopia. The two items on the left comprise samples of the content of the letter.

His objection to the production of flowers and bio-diesel shows his is ignoramus. Squandering the nation’s resources on such unsustainable crops is the reason he gave. The professor for that matter any professor who utters such nonsense should be barred from teaching. The flowers are grown in green houses that occupy very little area with the consequence that they use negligible space and therefore do not adversely affect crop production. The bio-plants are grown mainly on marginal lands not suitable for crop production. Flowers bring foreign currency and bio-diesel saves foreign currency, both badly needed for the development of the country. So what is his objective unless his intention is to disrupt the development the country is witnessing and thereby tell the world that nothing is being done, the mantra of his likes.

Oh professor don’t you feel shame when you say REST was formed to replace international NGO’s? It is apparent that you are trying to connect REST with the recently adopted Charities and Societies Proclamation related to NGOs and CSOs (civil society organizations). For your information, REST was created during TPLF struggle while you were, perhaps, working for your useless PhD. Besides, with what resources do you think REST could replace the NGOs? And what is the purpose of reducing the population of Tigray from over four millions to less than three millions?

Finally, if, by some miracle, your letter were to reach President Obama, do you honestly think he will consider your plea. On the contrary he would be disgusted at such a presentation coming from a professor at that.

The two items on the left are among the seven items that Finot Democracy posted in one of its Samntawi Zena Zegeba. As usual, this week’s presentation is replete with report received (“yederesen zegeba”). According to the “reports”, Woyane is behind the recent trouble between Christians and Moslems. It accused Woyane of purposely creating conflict designed for the followers of the two religions to annihilate each other. It adds that this approach has been attempted a number of times in the past.

The Samntawi Zena Zegeba accuses the Patriarch Abune Paulos and Sheikh Elias Redwan as being accomplices in this act. It said that the annihilation was avoided thanks to the forward looking (arqo astewy) people.

It is indeed sad that there are persons that think the unthinkable and demonize government and religious leaderships. They have no conscience. They are full of hatred to the brim. They are racists. They are obsessed with snatching power at any cost to the people and the country. They do not care of the consequences of their acts and incitement. If these do not describe these creatures what does! What devilish mind can come up with the above accusations? Are they telling us the government which prides itself on religious tolerance is so foolish to play with fire, start religious war (a ticking time bomb) that will spread like wild fire and consume everybody? They should be reminded that it is thanks to the EPRDF’s instituting religious and ethnic harmony that saved the country from being a failed state, worse than Somalia? The Reporter’s articles  “የመንግሥት መግለጫ ኦርቶዶክስ ቤተ ክርስቲያንን አሳዝኗል(25 January 2009) and ሁሉም ወደ አእምሮው ቢመለስ መልካም ነው”(25 January 2009) on the contrary show the government has done its investigation and was reported rounding the culprits who are creating condition for Christian/Islam conflict. As a result 18 members of Kwarej, a radical Islamic group are under custody. The PM’s reply to a related question in his recent interview showed the accusation was garbage. What is amazing is that the Finote and EPRP mafia have the audacity of insulting the intelligence of readers. Anyway, that is to be expected from robots that specialize in fabricating lies and spinning statements and events.

5. Why did Aba Dula Gemeda donate his home to OPDO?, ethiopianreview.com, January 29th, 2009

Aba Dulan lnleqew anchlm. Esun yemiteka tamagn sew yelenm.

The two short sentences in Amharic are supposed to have been uttered by PM Meles Zenawi. It is difficult to buy this allegation. The PM is smart enough to make statements of this nature in front of persons that are likely to leak them. So one could safely conclude that Elias’s factory of lies is the only source. He fabricatred this lie with the intent to create a wedge between the two.

UEDP-Medhin is now Ethiopian Democratic Party (EDP) የኢትዮጵያውያን ዴሞክራሲያዊ ፓርቲ (ኢዴፓ). Its assessment in regard to the incumbent ruling party and oppositions is summarized on the left column. This frank assessment in itself makes EDP the only genuine party among the blind oppositions in the country. It is genuine because it gives credit and supports the government when justified and criticizes and confronts the government when it thinks it is at fault, when its policies and strategies are at variance, e.t.c. At parliament level it is practically the only opposition party which comes with new and alternative ideas and solutions to problems facing the country. It believes, and rightly so, that the mistaken notion of struggle is understood to mean wiping out the EPRDF government.

7. Time to Dismantle Ethio-Eritrean Despotism to its Demise, by Alex Birhanu, ethiolion.com, 2/10/09

At the time, Herman Cohen who brokered the 1991 soft-landing of the TPLF / EPRDF in Addis Ababa and that of the EPLF in Asmara told the Conference stating: "… by not allowing Ethiopia a country of 70 million people access to the sea - if this is not the crime of the century then it is the biggest mistake of the agreement".

Did Herman Cohen really say that? The quoted part sounds tyical Ethiopian oppositions’ and their supporters’ mantra.

8. Open letter to Economist Conference Organizers, by Tedla Asfaw, ethiolion.com, 2/10/09

My telephone call to you few minutes ago was not welcomed …The Economist…organizing a conference in Addis Ababa in March 24, 2009…barbaric regime of Meles Zenawi is going to use this opportunity to get credibility in the eyes of the world.

The only aim of this conference is  to give a platform for Meles Zenawi and his racist buddies  to show their English language skill for possible job opportunity if they survive the coming upheaval in Ethiopia.

According to the Economist Executive meetings the “First Business Roundtable with the Government of Ethiopia is scheduled for 23-24 March, 2009.

Mr. writer you seem not to understand why the person you tried to convince to cancel the conference in Addis rebuffed you. He she—armed with knowledge of Ethiopia acquired while preparing for the Confernce—definitely realized the moment you opened your mouth that you and your likes are useless, not worth wasting his/her time. He/she knew what you tried to feed him/her about Ethiopia was lies, biased and very much exaggerated. Go on screaming for ever and ever.

One of your arguments to convince the Economist is Meles Zenawi will use the conference to “get credibility in the eyes of the world.” I know that the PM’s commands great respect and popularity worldwide. This is a thorn in the eyes of his detractors. As we all know the PM has participated in and hosted many international forum and conferences. These comprise the G-7, G-20, China-Africa, India-Africa, etc.— representing Africa in some of them. He debated with world leaders on a variety of subjects, including the environment. He served as Chairman of the AU/OAU, IGAD, the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM),  and others. He received a number of honorary PhDs and awards. He is among the few African leaders with such a record and the only one who earned two degrees with great distinctions while running the affair of the country. Obviously, the Economist’s decision to hold the Conference in Addis Ababa is a confirmation of these realities. Any way, he is so well known that whether he hosts the Economist Conference or not will not reduce his stature.

The last sentence on the left is absurd. The Economist did not say their “only aim” was that. In fact, it cannot be by any stretch of imagination. If the PM and many of his colleagues want jobs they surely do not need exposure via the Economist Conference. Many international organization would be happy to welcome them to join.

9. The World's 11 deadliest leaders of the past 100 years, by Earthling Concerned with some revision by Ethiopian Review ethiomedia.com, February 10th, 2009

Below is a list of the most destructive world leaders in the last 100 years. I got most of the numbers from here and if you want more information on the person in question, just click on his name and Wikipedia will bring you up to speed.

Top Ten: The World’s Deadliest Leaders of the Past 100 Years” is the actual title by the original author, Earthling Concerned. The 11th (PM  Meles) was added, guess by who--of course Elias, who else can it be?

Pictures, detailed write-ups and extensive list of links are provided on each of the ten. Except for a single picture inserted by Elias himself there is no other documentation similar to that of the Top Ten included for the PM. This is pure delusion and hate politics as usual.

10. Appeal to President Clinton, by Ethiopian Americans for Justice, ethiolion.com, February 11, 2009New York.

In a letter to President Clinton, Ethiopian Americans for Justice (EAJ) said...We have reason to believe that the huge donation [$20 million] to the Clinton Foundation was made [by Sheikh Mohammed Al-Amoudi] on behalf of the Ethiopian government.

This allegation is the core of the writing. And yet the only reason given in its support is “we have reason to believe.” Does the so-called Ethiopian Americans for Justice really believe President Clinton is naïve to buy such flimsy and unfounded allegation, without an iota of evidence? What is the point of citing mention of Sheikh Al-Amoudi’s name in connection with 9/11 which was found out had nothing to do with the Sheikh. Isn’t this an insult to the former articulate and brainy President of the USA? If this letter was meant to convince President Clinton one surely should not expect his staff let alone him to even read such a trash. (In regard to the generosity of Sheikh Al-Amoudi please listen to “Ben’s Point of View on the latest letter penned by Vocal Diaspora” dated 2/11/09.)
