Response to the provocative act of Eritrea

Response to the provocative act of Eritrea

Gemechu Tussa 06-21-16

The Eritrean government has no intention of peaceful coexistence. Rather it has been working unreservedly to create tenterhook, chaos and instability. What we learnt from the very beginning of Issayas’s coming to power was its aggressive nature has also revived. What has happened last week was emanated from its very nature of its irresponsibility.

The aggressive state in Asmara has attempted to attack and cross Ethiopian territory witnessing its aggressive nature to the international community. It took its provocative measures upon Ethiopia, a country working industriously day in day out to alleviate poverty and ensure sustainable economic growth.

As maintaining the sovereign of the country is the moral and legal duty of its citizens, the Ethiopian government decided to take proportional measures to that provocative action. Government Communication Affairs Office Minister Getachew Reda confirmed that the Ethiopian army has taken an appropriate measure upon the Eritrean army.  As a result, the state in Eritrea faced a serious damage. The military measure meaningfully gave the rouge state in Asmara a significant lesson.

Despite Ethiopia’s need for peace and stability, the country was compelled by the aggressive state in Eritrea to engage in such unnecessary conflict. It is the Eritrean government that has to shoulder the responsibility of all the damages and chaos in the territories of both countries.

The Eritrean people are crying for peace and stability. They want to coexist peacefully with other people in the region. They are desirous to get peaceful atmosphere and work hard to win their daily bread. In the contrary of the interest of the people, the Eritrean government has been waging wars and attempting to create instability in the region; thereby, elongate its stay in power.

The best solution for the Eritrean people to live peacefully with their neighboring people is surely the overthrow of the dictatorial military. The only headache for the Eritrean people is the aggressive nature of the rule in Eritrea.  All of the Eritrean people displaced from their country to Ethiopia usually suggest this solution.  The Eritrean refugees in Ethiopia have celebrated 54th anniversary of the start of their armed struggle. The participants said that they were obliged to migrate to different countries due to the dictatorial regime in the country.

They confirmed the aggressive nature of the state in Asmara. Corruption has become rife in that country. The refuges witnessed that the people were obliged to bribe corrupt leaders and soldiers up to 100 thousand Nakfa for any service at home. As a result, they prefer to leave their country. But all of them couldn’t be successful in crossing boarders. Most mothers and children died while migrating.

Giday Tsehay is one of the Eritrean refugees in Ethiopia. He said, “The Eritrean people failed to enjoy peace and stability. There is no hope for democracy, peace and development.  This is due to the dictatorial pattern and nature of the state and its advocates. The sacrifice the Eritrean people had paid for freedom and democracy has turned to suffering and misery”.

The United Nations has confirmed the misery and the violation of human rights Eritrea. Despite the allegations and condemnations from the international community and the African union, the state in Eritrea failed to see its grave mistakes in handling the people. The degree of violation of human rights has raised from time to time. There is no idea of peace and development.

The number of Eritrean people displaced from their country and crossing to Ethiopia shows an upward trajectory in the past ten years. In the first few years of the conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea, about 500 people were crossing to Ethiopia. In the meantime, it rose to 5 thousand per month. In this regard, Eritrea ranked second in the glob following Sorya.

The problem has currently aggravated. The delegation of the United Nations responsible to evaluate the human rights situations in Eritrea, witnessed the worst situation. It ensured the thrive of worst human rights violation in the country that the state in Asmara has been committing a devastating crime on its own people. Eritrea is now passing in a critical moment due to the tyrannical state in Asmara.  There is no proper state system functioning in the country. The state has become one of the failed states in Africa. It has failed to look forward on how to alleviate poverty rather has been focusing on destabilizing agenda.

According to the United Nations’ report, the Eritrean government is guilty of committing crimes against humanity since a quarter-century ago.  with up to 400,000 people enslaved. "We probably think that there are 300,000 to 400,000 people who have been enslaved," chief UN investigator Mike Smith told journalists in Geneva. The report also indicated that the state in Eritrea has been  operating a shoot-to-kill policy to stop people fleeing the country.  It is evident that about 5,000 Eritrean people risk their lives each month to flee the nation.

Receiving Eritrean refugees is a day to day activity in Ethiopia. It receives and helps them.  It has so far received about 175 thousand Eritrean people. The Ethiopian government has been doing various supports to the Eritrean refugees. It allowed for more than 2000 Eritrean students to attend their university education in various Ethiopian universities and colleges. Besides, it facilitates them to go to third countries where they could get better chance.

All what the regime has been doing is planning various ways in which it could spoil the peace in the Horn region.  The state in Eritrea, from the very beginning of its secession, has been aggravating conflicts with all neighboring countries. It had embarked conflict with Yemen, Djibouti, Sudan and Ethiopia. Besides, it has been playing a negative and peace poisoning role in Somalia and South Sudan.

Government Communication Affairs Office Minister Getachew Reda, in connection to last week’s conflict between the two countries, emphasized that the loss inflicted on Eritrean military as a result of Ethiopia’s recent retaliatory measure makes the state in Asmara to stop and reassess the mistakes it committed.  The measure was taken in response to Eritrea’s attempt to destabilize Ethiopia.

According to the minister, the government of Ethiopia will continue taking proportional measures if Eritrea continues its provocative action, he said. The future of the two countries whether to engage in war or not depends on the Eritrean government.

Ethiopia has been focusing on alleviating poverty and ensuring sustainable development. It has been working industriously to realize its renaissance. Therefore,  its multifaceted efforts to bring lasting peace and stability in the region has strengthened from time to time.

The developmental state of Ethiopia  is highly enthusiastic to ensure sustainable economic development alleviating the deep-rooted poverty and backwardness in the country. The people and government of Ethiopia are well aware of the need of peace as the basic factor, among many others, for the realization of sustainable development. Development is impossible without the revival of peace and stability so that  the country has been strengthened its efforts to bring lasting  in the continent in general and the Horn Region in particular.

The current development agenda coerced the country to give high priority for peace and stability. That is why the government and people of Ethiopia are ready to solve any conflict through dialogue and negotiation. The country has already identified poverty as its arch foe. As a result, the government along with its people has been striving to pull their country out of the quagmire of poverty giving priority for peace and stability.

However, Eritrea has been destabilizing the region and coerced Ethiopia to take a military action. In this regard, it would be of paramount importance to comprehend the tangible political, economic and social deteriorations in Eritrea.

Eritrea is a failed state with desperate leaders who usually give priority to aggression, war and conflict as they want to galvanize their internal problems under the pretext of unity, sovereignty and the like.  That is what we have learned from desperate leaders of different countries around the world. They pay little attention to the welfare of their people and neither do they care for their neighboring countries.  The failed Eritrean state has been doing the same. It has been training and arming terrorist groups who could destabilize the horn of Africa in general and Ethiopia in particular.

The international community  has recognized Eritrea’s destabilizing activities and not only repeatedly condemned it  but also imposed a sanction on the state in Asmara. Despite all these efforts to restrain Eritrea from its negative deeds, the Issayas regime has paid little attention to all peace efforts and has continued escalating series of conflicts in the region.

The people and government of Ethiopia still want to develop and achieve a harmonious co-operation with all countries in the region including Eritrea.  The recent measures taken by the Ethiopia Defense Forces are proportional to the provocative actions of the rouge state in Asmara.

Conflict, by no means, could be Ethiopia’s first choice. The measure causes for the dispute between Ethiopia and Eritrea is due to the aggressive nature of the state in Asmara. It has to read its grave mistakes  and restrain from such provocative actions. Uless Issayas Afeworki chooses peaceful coexistence, it the Eritream region obviously will count its days.
