ISRAEL: A POLICEMAN BEATING A SOLDIER, WHAT AN ODIOUS!!

It is both funny and unpleasant to hear a policeman beating a soldier who are both equally responsible in securing public safety to any given society. Even if there is any grudge or misunderstanding in between them, either of them should not take the law into their own hands and retaliate in verbal or physical abuse. However, this has happened in Israel where a white policeman has beaten an Ethiopian Jew soldier, which soon became a major news headline in most of International TV outlets.

Although the source of their quarrel is unknown, trivial issues like snatching one's girl or communication gap could be guessed at first instance, if the matter is taken seriously, as it appears to be, could be of xenophobic or racial discrimination.  Though the brown color of Ethiopian Jews and their handsome looking have become a source of impression or affection among Israelite women and a discontent to many men, as the rumor goes, cannot be at any cost a matter of national issue.

As a result of of the beating, the Ethiopian Jewish community have come out to the streets of Jerusalem and Tel Avive to express their anger. It would be naive to think that such an incidence would spark such a violent demonstration. I think the violence is a cumulative effect of highly charged social discrimination, color bias, and unequal treatment between white and black Jews.

Unlike the emigration of people from one country to another due to environmental, political or economic reasons, the immigration of Ethiopian Jews to Israel did not have any political, economic or social motives. It was purely religious, venerating the Torah. The Ethiopian Jews, better known as "Bete Israel," are the descents of Jews from Solomonic Israel, the lost tribe of Dan or fossilized survival from Pr-Christian Axum.

The Ethiopian Jewish prior to their  immigration to Israel was perceived by many as a journey in completing themselves a part returning to the whole, to their Jews brothers and sisters. Hence, after 1980 onwards the Ethiopian Jews began to move to Israel. During the early 90s, it was a litmus test to the EPRDF Government in respecting the freedom of movement to its citizens. It indeed worked out.

The Ethiopian Jews, once independent people with unique culture are now entangled with various economic and social exclusions. Once perceived Israel as a place to righteous people dressed in white and a land flowing with milk and honey turned out to be a land of economic misery and racial segregation and the ugliest of all is that Ethiopian women are injected birth control without their consent.

Although some successive Israeli govts. have attempted in socializing the Ethiopian Jews into Israeli society, the incumbent Government has to have a clear policy in absorbing fully into the society. A persistent and an ongoing effort of the state of Israel and the Jewish people on the full integration of the Ethiopian Jews is a moral  and a legal obligation. Disrespecting and dehumanizing the Ethiopian Jews as it is reportedly seen in some International TV outlets is a dishonor and a disrespect to the nation and the people of Israel from the International Community.
