An Open Letter to HE Mr. Joseph R. Biden, Jr., 46th President of the United States of America
Goitom Aregawi, MD, 05-21-21 - Mr. President, I am writing this appreciating Your Excellency’s historic decision to recognize the Armenian Genocide and appealing for Your administration to investigate and stop the ongoing Genocide in Tigray with distinctively similar features with the Armenian Genocide.

Hiding behind the Sovereignty Skirt: Ethiopia's Foreign Ministry Statement
Fitih Ashenafi 05-21-21 - On 17 May, the Ethiopian regime has issued a spurious statement. The regime pronounces that an 'attempt to meddle in Ethiopia's internal affairs' is not acceptable. The main reason for this is the call by the US (and other) government for the withdrawal of Amhara forces from Tigray's territories

US Senate passes unanimous resolution calling for withdrawal of Eritrean forces from Ethiopia
(CNN)The US Senate has unanimously passed a resolution calling for the immediate withdrawal of Eritrean troops from Ethiopia's war-torn northern Tigray region, after a CNN investigation revealed that the soldiers were cutting off critical aid routes. A CNN team traveling through Tigray in late April witnessed Eritrean soldiers, some disguising themselves in old Ethiopian military uniforms, blocking aid to starving populations

Ethiopian soldiers armed with guns and grenades raid hospital featured in CNN report
(CNN)Ethiopian soldiers armed with machine guns, sniper rifles and grenades raided a hospital in Ethiopia's war-torn northern Tigray region earlier this week in retribution, doctors say, for a CNN investigation that revealed Ethiopian and Eritrean troops were blocking humanitarian aid to patients there.

Genocide in Ethiopia?
The head of Ethiopia's Orthodox Church, Abune Mathias, recently condemned the ongoing armed conflict in Ethiopia's Tigray region and the suffering it's causing the civilian population. Abune Mathias may be the highest-profile figure to label the alleged criminal acts against Tigrayans as genocide, but he's not the first. In January, the leader of the Tigray People's Liberation Front and former president of Tigray - Debretsion Gebremichael - accused the Ethiopian and Eritrean forces of waging a "devastating and genocidal war" in Tigray.

Pandemic of Hunger Symposium: The Ethio-Eritrean Hunger Plan for Tigray and the Failure of Resolution 2417
Alex de Waalt 05-18-21 - Tigray, Ethiopia, is a test case for United Nations Security Council resolution 2417 (2417). The United Nations has failed that test. Today, between 4.5 million and 5.2 million people of Tigray's total population of 5.7 million are in need of immediate humanitarian assistance. Famine is probably occurring already, and without doubt in the coming months Tigrayans will be...

Livestreaming Genocide
Elias Dawit 05-16-21 - It is perplexing to read the reporting on Ethiopia's war against Tigrayans. The recitation of facts in the dry tones of conventional journalism project almost an ordinariness to the events. The words "genocide," "humanitarian disaster," "atrocities against civilians," "mass starvation" and even "rape" have somehow failed to convey the sheer depth of interminable sadness, loss and utter horror that a people are undergoing.

The US and the UN have failed Tigrayans so far. They have allowed Abiy and Isaias Afewerki to destroy the livelihoods of many Tigrayans. For the record, the US was the main sponsor of Abiy Ahmed. Without its support, Abiy nor Isaias would not have caused the untold destruction on Tigrayans and their economy. Be that as it may, Tigrayans are encouraged by the Biden administration's gesture and aid rendered so far. But more needs to be done to avoid a catastrophic famine soon. The US and UN must start a food airdrop before the rainy season starts. It is an open secret Isaias Afeworki and Abiy Ahmed are using food as a weapon. They should not succeed doing that. Start an Airdrop operation now and save lives.

People face 'horrific' situation in Ethiopia's Tigray: WHO chief
Ethiopia's conflict-hit Tigray region is facing a horrifying situation with people dying of hunger, health services destroyed and rape "rampant", according to the World Health Organization chief, who is from the region. "The situation in Tigray, Ethiopia, is, if I use one word, horrific. Very horrific," WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a news conference on Monday

GENOCIDE IN TIGRAY:
Mekonnen Abraha 05-17-21 - The word Genocide was coined by Raphael, Lemkin, a Jewish lawyer in 1944, in Poland in his book Axis Rule in Occupied Europe, describing the Nazi policies and their implementation. The word is a combination of ancient Greek word genos meaning race or people with the Latin word cide, meaning to kill.

As Ethiopia Fights in Tigray Region, a Crackdown on Journalists
(New York Times) - NAIROBI, Kenya - One Ethiopian journalist was taken away by police officers as his distraught 10-year-old daughter clung to him. Another fled the country after she said armed men ransacked her home and threatened to kill her. And a foreign reporter working for The New York Times had his press credentials revoked, days after he interviewed victims of sexual assault and terrified residents in the conflict-torn Tigray

World History of Genocide for comparison with Tigray
Kalayu Abraha 05-14-21 - Homo sapiens is the only species in the animal kingdom which is not much affected by the mass extermination of its own kind. Normally, advancement is measured not merely by the state-of-the-art tools and methods we use but by how much we value human life. That was the reason why the preamble of the UN-Charter states...

Ethiopia's Attorney General's Sham Axum Massacre and Rape 'Findings': A futile cover-up and obstruction of justice
Fitih Ashenafi 13.05.21 - First, the Ethiopian regime, through his Attorney General's office, fabricated facts regarding the events leading up to the Axum massacre. Deputy attorney general Fikadu Tsega declared 93 people most of whom the 'trained youth' were killed by the Eritrean forces. Amnesty, Human Rights Watch, other reputed international sources and, to a great extent, the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) reports sharply contradict the regime's Attorney's account. For example, Amnesty made it clear that...

Eritrean troops disguised as Ethiopian military are blocking critical aid in Tigray
Axum, Ethiopia - Eritrean troops are operating with total impunity in Ethiopia's war-torn northern Tigray region, killing, raping and blocking humanitarian aid to starving populations more than a month after the country's Nobel Peace Prize winning leader pledged to the international community that they would leave

On History: a reflection
Aesop 05/08/2021 - History! There are endless definitions of history. I endorse E.H. Carr’s perspective. Carr presents history as an interpretation. The journalist tallies daily events; the historian gives them meaning. Moreover, this definition of history as interpretation acknowledges the role of human subjectivity over reality. Stories are not disembodied. They reflect our intimate feelings and values.

GSTS Open Letter : Abiy Ahmed Ali is a Force of Instability and Disintegration
GSTS 05-12-21 - We, the Global Society of Tigray Scholars and Professionals (GSTS)i, note that many countries, particularly the diplomatic missions in Addis Ababa, believe that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and his so-called reform need to be salvaged. Contrary to this, realities on the ground in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa prove that Abiy Ahmed is a force of instability and disintegration. None of the much-needed reforms have be realized, democratization and stability have proven elusive.

Ethiopia Must Set Right Environment for Election, US Says
WASHINGTON - The United States said a "free, fair, and credible election" can happen only with a conducive electoral environment. The statement comes amid a humanitarian crisis and conflict in Ethiopia's northern Tigray region. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken had pressed for Ethiopia's and Eritrea's commitments to withdraw Eritrean troops from Tigray "immediately, in full, and in a verifiable manner."
