Word of Wisdom for our time(forwarded by Daniel Kendie - 2-28-19 )
With regard to conditions in Ethiopia and Somalia, perhaps what Frantz Fanon wrote in 1968 may provide some explanation: We no longer see the rise of a bourgeois dictatorship, but a tribal dictatorship. The ministers, the members of the cabinet, the ambassadors and local commissioners are chosen from the same ethnological group as the leader, sometimes directly from his own family. This tribalizing of the central authority, it is certain, encourages regionalist ideas and separatism. All the decentralizing tendencies spring up again and triumph, and the nation falls to pieces, broken in bits. Continuing on the same argument Fanon asserted that: The actions of a tribal (clan)-minded dictator provoke the opposition to demand regional and ethnic distribution of national resources. However, the tribalist dictator, "irresponsible as ever, still unaware and still despicable, denounces their "treason.""

For the Record
Immediately after the Abiy government invited all kinds of Diaspora extremists and anarchists to the country this forum has been pleading to Abiy's government to make sure the rule of law is respected. We admonished him not to ignore the plea of many people and to hold those openly advocating for genocide to be made accountable. We pleaded with him not to allow the government's propaganda machine to be an instrument of white lie propaganda. Above all, we pleaded with him for almost 7 months to respect the constitution and to release innocent employees the government had incarcerated without any wrongdoing. All to no avail! Now that the country is falling apart and innocent government officials have been killed in broad daylight, Abiy seems to realize his only chance of remaining in power is to save the EPRDF coalition and to respect the constitution. This should not have happened! Abiy was wrong to listen to western analysts and hired lobbyist regarding the peace and stability of Ethiopia and its citizens! He should have known no Arab country or neoliberal has an inkling or desire to see Ethiopia prosper! There is time to mend the wrongs and save the Federation. We again implore Abiy to seize the fertile opportunity before the country falls off the cliff.

The US economy likely just entered its longest-ever expansion - here's who benefited in 3 charts
The U.S. economy likely surpassed an important milestone last month: Americans are now experiencing the longest economic expansion in the nation's history, assuming the data still being collected bears this out. This is certainly good news and something to celebrate. But, as an economist who focuses on income inequality, I believe it's important to look deeper into the data to see who really has gained from this record economy.

A new cold war in Africa
Mehari Taddele Maru 6-30-19 Last week, the 12th US-Africa Business Summit, a high-level event attended by 11 African heads of state and government and some 1,000 business leaders, was held in Maputo, Mozambique. During the three-day event, US officials unveiled a $60bn investment agency which will seek to invest in low and middle-income countries, with a special focus on Africa.

Abiy Ahmed's reforms in Ethiopia lift the lid on ethnic tensions
Ethiopia's system of ethnic federalism was always going to be vulnerable to politicians playing on atavistic sentiments. And the speed of Mr. Abiy's reforms has unsettled the four-party coalition that makes up the ruling party. There is acute alienation among Tigrayans .In Oromia and Amhara - the two most populous states - smaller parties have emerged appealing to crude ethnic sentiment
After destroying the country, the Monday-morning quarterbacks are telling us what we warned them a long time ago! No single ethnic is dominant in Ethiopia! The 6% campaign these journalists promoted has caused untold displacement and the killing of innocent Ethnic Tigreans! Don't ever forget that! Zeru Hagos June 29, 2019

What to do with Cohen and Al Mariam tug of war? Al Mariam is blaming Choen for masterminding the Eritrean independence(Isaias Afeworki are you reading) while Cohen is blaming people like Al Mariam from the Amhara community for trying to restore the old regime as the people behind the recent killing. Cohen thinks that the old regime is dead and will never come back again! Now what to do with these two gentlemen? Should we say (enho medaw enho feresu) or call Abiy the peacemaker/medemer expert to intervene? Both were his staunch supporters a year or so ago! What is happening in Ethiopia today is the result of a misguided policy of 'medmer' where all kind of extremist and anarchist, as well as a hired lobbyist, were allowed to interfere in Ethiopia's politics.

In a western democracy, reporters must report the news as is with no spin. But western journalists reporting about Africa have always spun the news to match the narrative their respected governments are promoting. The recent killing and the year-long displacement in Ethiopia is always reported by these 'animals' pardon my language as if it is a side effect of the 'reform'. I really missed PM Meles- do you remember when he told kinjit folks to respect the law using the phrase "ferenj aydenachu ..."! Ethiopians must know no one will come to rescue them! The Biggest Displacement Crisis That Almost No One Is Talking About
Monday's headlines, which saw the killing of a general accused of plotting a coup attempt, suggest the government's position is fragile. Ethiopia's current situation brings to mind Alexis de Tocqueville's famous warning that the most dangerous moment for a bad government is when it starts to reform. Ethnic conflict is surfacing. Much of the worst of the crisis has occurred in the country's southern region, where hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced by fighting between the Oromo and Gedeo ethnic groups. Abiy is Oromo, and many of his reforms are meant to address the marginalization of several ethnic groups, including his own. But observers say the reforms have emboldened communal violence by Oromos.
While such displacement is happening the US and the British government has said nothing. In fact, if you read the recent embassy statements from Addis you would think if Abiy is becoming embolden to do more of the same thinking that is what the two superpowers want him to do! What did Ethiopia do to deserve this?

Ethiopia: 37 killed in another region after coup attempt
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia - Thirty-seven people were killed in an attack Sunday in Ethiopia's Benishangul-Gumuz region, the governor said Wednesday. Benishangul-Gumuz borders the Amhara region, where authorities foiled a deadly attempt to oust the regional government on Saturday. Ashadli Hassen, governor of Benishangul-Gumuz, said Wednesday that the attack on villages in Metakal zone was carried out before dawn Sunday by armed men.

Ethiopia's coup attempt spells disaster for its democratic transition
The biggest obstacle to Ethiopia's transition to democracy came knocking this weekend. In what officials described as a coup attempt, the governor of the northern Amhara region Ambachew Mekonnen along with advisor Ezez Wassie were killed. The regional attorney general Migbaru Kebede also sustained heavy injuries. The country's chief of staff Seare Mekonnen was also killed by his bodyguard in his residence in Addis Ababa along with major general Gezai Abera.
Now that Ethiopia is almost there to be called a full-fledged failed state, it will be interesting to know which one of the current 'democratic process' sponsors will cry foul first to intervene with force! It is a public secret the game plan was to force TPLF to become entangled in this quagmire so it is blamed as the main instigator and invite outside forces to intervene but so far TPLF has resisted the temptation! Ethiopia is going down.It is so sad to see its politicians failing miserably. If these politicians think there is a good ending for them they are wrong. Just open history book - Zeru Hagos June 24, 2019

Who is the mastermind behind the instability and current assassinations in Ethiopia?
Ermias Hailu June 24, 2019 - It is a well-established fact that Egypt has been "the behind the curtain" organizer, financer, and leader of the instabilities Ethiopia has been experiencing over the last nine years. Same is also true on the current instabilities of Sudan where Egypt and its "defacto colony Eretria" are jointly working to put their puppet government in Sudan and destroy the Ethiopia-Sudan alliance established by the late PM Meles and President Omar al-Basher.

Ethiopia Media Proclamation - Draft
The draft proclamation will be presented to parliament soon to be enacted as law. The country is facing insurmountable difficulties to maintain law and order ever since the governing party the EPRDF became dysfunctional. This law will certainly be used by the current government to tame any independent media that does not tiptoe and support the government.
