House Endorses Bill Governing NGOs, Civil Societies

UDJ at a Cross Road:Issues to ponder and be informed.

Addis Ababa, January 6, 2009 (Addis Ababa) - The House of Peoples Representatives endorsed a bill providing for the registration and regulation of charities and civil societies organizations in its regular session held here on Tuesday.
Major NGOs said they see no problem with this bill and it is business as usual. They will work with the governemnt.

The justice minister in a recent interview said UDJ Chairwoman Birtukan Medekssa was sent back to prison according to the law of the land. The next question is would UDJ insist to have a convicted person serving in jail as its chairwoman or elect a new one? Would the Ethiopian law allow the organization to have a convicted person as its chairman/woman if UDJ insists to keep Birtukan as its leader? IS UDJ in peril too?

Thought for Today

It’s not that we need to form new organizations. It’s simply that we have to awaken to new ways of thinking. I believe it makes no sense to spend a lot of time attacking the current realities. It is time to create the new models that have in them the complexity that makes the older systems obsolete. And to the extent that we can do that, and do that quickly, I think we can provide what will be necessary for a major breakthrough for the future. By Dr. Don Beck

Civil Society Fumbles on the Fundamentals

Contrary to what many in the civil society advocate, there is little evidence to support the claim that the state is out to rob citizens of their right of association, whether or not they would want to be advocates of human or other rights. But the authors of the bill are keen to make a distinction between a right the constitution granted to citizens, and privileges the state has the prerogative to grant or deny to non-citizens. Frankly, it is hard to prove them wrong....
