The Puff Adder
When it strikes its victim
The Puff Adder is bad.
As it huffs and puffs,
They say it can count and add.
If you step on a Puff Adder
Believe me you will be sad...

Unfortunately, in Ethiopia, we are noticing ongoing violations of constitutional provisions which lead to constitutional crises. Constitutional crises happen when a constitution fails to accomplish the objectives...

The above news coupled with the following news on Ethio-Djibouti-pipeline is somewhat assuring not all is lost in Ethiopia as far as development work goes. One can only hope such news will be the norm as it used to be instead of the daily news about killings and uprootings!

ፀጋዝአብ ለምለም ተስፋይ 2-19-19

The 44th Anniversary of Lekatit11 was celebrated across Tigrai and around many cities in the world in a colorful way. What makes this year's celebration unique is the energy exhibited by the people and the fact that many of the top TPLF leaders who left the organization due to a disagreement were present in Mekelle to receive a thank you award. The current Ethiopian politics may be much to be desired due to the many killings and displacement of people in many corners of the country, however, due to the ill-conceived attack against TPLF, its history and the people of Tigrai in general, the people are more united than ever! Some say the current political order in Ethiopia is a blessing in disguise! How true!- Feb 18, 2019

Ethiopia's plan to privatize and split up its mobile phone monopoly won't be as easy as it looks
After decades of a centralized economic model and antiquated socialist red tape, Ethiopia is opening up to the world. Last year, the government announced plans to gradually privatize state-owned enterprises in a bid to expand the role of the private sector,
Long before PM Abiy came to power, we have advocated for partial privatization of telecom services or at least the break-up of Ethio telecom to four regional bells so a quasi-competition is introduced between the subsidiaries. To our dismay, instead of introducing competition, the EPRDF government hired a foreign company to run the giant company! Although the Abiy government current privatization process is heavily influenced by the neo-liberals, it is time for Ethio-telecom to be introduced to some kind of private competition. The question is: can the Abiy govt stand against the neo-liberals and maintain some kind of veto power to save the country during economic hardship? Power shift creates new tensions and Tigrayan fears in Ethiopia
Disagreements over land and resources between the 80 different ethnic groups in Ethiopia have often led to violence and mass displacement, but a fast and unprecedented shift of power led by reformist Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is causing new strains, experts say.During the first half of 2018, Ethiopia's rate of 1.4 million new internally displaced people exceeded Syria's. By the end of last year, the IDP population had mushroomed to nearly 2.4 million

Genocide: why a focus on prevention would produce a better outcome
One hundred and forty nine countries have signed the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide of 1948. These signatories present themselves as the authorities who are committed to and entrusted with preventing genocide. But none of these countries are held accountable when they ignore the duties set out in the convention.
The current political development in Ethiopia is worrisome. Unless the government and political leaders sit down and solve their issues things will not improve. God save our people! (forwarded email!)
