Is Ethiopia the new Syria?

Michael Rubin December 08, 2021 07:00 AM - Today, Ethiopia is rapidly becoming the new Syria. In November 2020, Tigrayan leadership rejected Ethiopian Premier Abiy Ahmed's order to postpone elections. They feared that he sought to follow the path of self-described reformers who consolidate dictatorship. Abiy reacted with fury, sought to decapitate the Tigrayan military leadership, and then dispatched the Ethiopian army to Mekelle, the capital of the Tigray state. While Ethiopian officials insisted Abiy’s battle was just with the Tigray People's Liberation Front, the army not only denied food to the entire Tigray Region but also closed Tigrayan businesses in Addis Ababa and rounded up ethnic Tigrayans in internment camps. To be a Tigrayan in Abiy's Ethiopia is to be a dead man walking.

Open Letter to Amb. Jeffrey D. Feltman : Why Interviewing with a Genocidal Media Outlet?

Isaac M. 12.06.21 - Dear Amb. Feltman, I watched your interview of 1st December with ESAT with bewilderment and dismay. I respect your right to express your views using any media outlet you think is fit for your purposes. I also appreciate your endeavor to reach out to the noises of the government in the diaspora and inside Ethiopia. However, from a top diplomat and statesman of a democratic country like the United States, I would expect some ethical standards, sense of duty and respect for victims of heinous international crimes to dictate your conscience and deeds.

Tigray External Affairs Office: Weekly Briefing Dec 03, 2021
TEAO 12-06-21 -For over 5 weeks since October 18, humanitarian cargo movements had come to a grinding halt. On November 26, and 27, a total of 78 trucks arrived in Tigray. While the arrival of any number of trucks is a welcome development, the 78 trucks that arrived pale in comparison to the number of trucks needed to meet the needs of millions of people at risk of starvation. In fact, aid agencies had revised the number of required trucks per day to 282 from a previous estimate of 100...

Joint Statement on Detentions in Ethiopia
We, Australia, Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States, are profoundly concerned by recent reports of the Ethiopian government's detention of large numbers of Ethiopian citizens on the basis of their ethnicity and without charge. The Ethiopian government's announcement of a State of Emergency on November 2 is no justification for the mass detention of individuals from certain ethnic groups (Tigrayans).

Getachew Reda Update (12-06-21) : We left #NorthShoa, #Kombolcha & #Dessie as part of our plan. There was no organized unit to 'liberate' these towns and the residents know it & #Abiy's generals know it. Things are going according to our plan. The rest is just circus. As we always say, #TigrayShallPrevail!

Peace Is Still Possible in Ethiopia
By Senator Chris Coons December 6, 2021 - If Abiy and his opponents continue on their current path, they risk triggering not only massive bloodshed and economic collapse but the fracture of the Ethiopian state as we know it. Ethiopia is at risk of becoming this generation's Yugoslavia: a great nation and a regional leader that violently shatters along ethnic lines.

Tigray Government Letter to UN Secretary about UAE, Iran and Turkey Support to the Abiy Government to Commit Genocide in Tigray

Tigray Government Letter to UN Secretary about Tigrayan Mass Arrest in Ethiopia

(Mekelle) 11-29-21 - Tigray Government sent two letters to the UN Secretary about the ongoing genocidal campaign by the Abiy regime and the wide-scale mass arrest of Tigrayans in Ethiopia, the continued support by UAE, Iran, and Turkey to arm the Abiy regime to commit genocide. The government asked the Secretary-General to use his good office to help stop the ongoing genocidal campaign in Tigray.

Rights experts call for end to violence against women in Tigray conflict
The rights experts said although the exact prevalence of gender-based violence is unknown, estimates are shocking. From November 2020 through June of this year, some 2,204 survivors reported sexual violence to health facilities across the Tigray region. Furthermore, one of the one-stop centres reported that the majority of victims, or 90 per cent, were underage girls, and estimated that visits have quadrupled since the conflict began.

Ethiopia is tearing itself apart
The longer the 12-month conflict in Ethiopia drags on, the greater the damage to the fragile stability of the Horn of Africa. It has already sown the seeds of regional destabilization that will accelerate if a political settlement is not sought urgently.
Duh! It was written all over that Ethiopia and the Horn of African will be in turmoil if the Tigray conflict is not resolved . Did the International community listen? No it did not! The West should prepare for millions of refugees and a destabilized Horn region for the time to come or support the struggle of the people of Tigray to self administer and stabilize Ethiopia.

UN chief says aid and flights resuming to Ethiopia's Tigray
UNITED NATIONS - The U.N. chief had a piece of good news Wednesday in the midst of Ethiopia's year-long war against forces from the Tigray region: 157 trucks with food and humanitarian aid arrived in Tigray's capital for the first time in more than six weeks and another aid convoy was moving. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said U.N. flights between Tigray's capital Mekelle and Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa had also restarted.
Many people wonder if the recent strategic withdrawal by the Tigray Army from certain military insignificant areas in Amhara and Afar is part of a small step ceasefire or goodwill gesture agreement. If that is the case why would Abiy allow fuel and Aid to reach Tigray and bomb Tekeze Dam at the same time? The Tigrayan leadership should be very wary of the international community. There is no justification to let Abiy go free. He needs to pay for the atrocities he has committed on the people of Tigray. Justice, in this case, can only be served by the Tigrayan Army. It will be foolish to think that the international community including the USA will serve justice. Good news aid is getting in regardless!

No Celebration, No Dejection: TDF advance into Amhara and Afar was a means not an end

Kalayu Abrha 12-02-21 - Several hours before the official communique was released by the Central Command of Tigray Sanjit of My Views on News broke the news of the evacuation of TDF from key places that it had captured after heavy battles in the last few months. As a natural reflex I was caught off guard for a moment but got my composure back after examining my own thoughts on the TDF's campaign beyond the borders of Tigray.

Tigray Government Response to the Globe and Mail's "Report" on Sexual Violence in Amhara Region

(TEA-O) 12-01-21 - On November 29, 2021, The Globe and Mail published an article by Lucy Kassa and Geoffrey York, "Sexual Violence as a Weapon of War Spreads to New Regions in Ethiopia," accusing members of Tigray Armed Forces of sexual violence in a village in Geregera, Amhara region. The thinly-sourced piece by the Globe fails to meet minimum standards of investigative reporting. Given the lack of corroborating evidence the Government of Tigray would be justified in dismissing such shoddy reporting. However, given the exacting standards, our forces are subject to, we take accusations of sexual violence against them seriously. Consequently, we are compelled to address it head-on.

Zeyohannes Moges December 1, 2021 - It is a sin to hate the good people of Tigray. The 27 years of Hate Speeches by the Amhara Elites against the people of Tigray and then by the African ‘Nazi’ (Prosperity Party) and its media brain washed the majority Ethiopians. No matter what, it is a sin to hate or harm the people of Tigray.

The warning signs are there for genocide in Ethiopia - the world must act to prevent it
Genocide happens when warning signs are not heeded. The world looks away, refusing to believe that mass ethnic killing is possible. We hope that the worst will be avoided. All sides in Ethiopia's conflict have committed violations. But only one side has committed violations on a scale and nature that could credibly qualify as genocide - and that, we regret to say, is the coalition of the Ethiopian government, under Abiy Ahmed; the Amhara regional government; and the state of Eritrea. Twice in the past year, the world has stood by while this coalition has perpetrated international crimes against civilians of Tigrayan identity - including murder, rape, torture and starvation.

UAE air bridge provides military support to Ethiopia gov't
Satellite imagery obtained by Al Jazeera has revealed that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has opened an air bridge to provide extensive military support to the Ethiopian government in its fight against forces from the northern Tigray region. The investigation found that between September and November, there were more than 90 flights between the UAE and Ethiopia, with many intentionally concealing from where they took off and where they landed.

Statement from The Alliance of Civil Society Organizations of Tigray concerning the prevailing atrocity and stop the ethnic mass arrest and evict of Tigrians from all regions of Ethiopia and Western zone of Tigray
(ACSOT) 11-27-21 - We, members of the Alliance of Civil Society Organizations of Tigray (ACSOT) have been repeatedly informing the international community on violation and abuse of international human rights law, International Humanitarian law, and international crimes since the beginning of the war. As we stand today the war is advancing to the neighboring regions of Afar. Alliance of Civil Society Organizations of Tigray (ACSOT) calls upon the international community to say stop ethnic mass arrest of Tigrians in different regions of Ethiopia loudly and forcefully and urge to release all civilians arrested by their mere virtue of ethnicity in order to save their lives...

Denouncing Addis Ababa University's Recent Statement and Warning to Revoke Academic Degrees of Individuals Based on their Political Opinion
(GSTS) 11-28-21 - The Global Society of Tigray Scholars and Professionals (GSTS) is extremely shocked by Addis Ababa University's (AAU) recent politically motivated statement and unprecedented threat to retroactively revoke the academic degrees of individuals deemed to be supporting specific political parties. This is an extremely troubling step for several reasons and one which is emotionally distressing for many of our members whose academic and professional careers started at AAU.

Ethiopia's Breakup Doesn't Have to Be Violent
A confederation of states must choose whether to follow the bloody path of the former Yugoslavia or the prosperous model of the European Union. Ethiopia - a multinational state of considerable contradictions - is once again in the news for tragic events. The outside world, which tends to hold a romantic view of the country, is only beginning to understand these divisions
Confederation...Maybe! However, the -ism behind the Amhara-centric Ethiopian state must be abolished for the Confederation to work. Never trust the current Amhara elites to be a force of peace and development in any form of government. They are damaged goods. In hindsight, it is regretful, TPLF was so convinced about the future of the empire Ethiopia and worked hard to save it. At some point, the organization became more Amharanized promoting the Amhara-centric Ethiopianism. Zeru Hagos Nov 28, 2021

Genocide in Tigray and Abiy Ahmed the incarnation of African Hitler
Mulugeta Abai, Toronto Canada 11-18-21 - With the intensification of international, regional and bilateral efforts to stop war in Ethiopia we call upon you to add your voice for peace and spare no time to stop the present genocidal war in Tigray. The atmosphere of hate, terror, violence, blockade, deliberate displacement and man-made famine imposed on Tigray by the Ethiopian government of Abiy Ahmed has all characteristics of genocide.

Tigray is Still Calling for Justice
Call for a Global Protest - December 9, 2021

(SJT) 11-30-21 - The enemies of the Tigray people are once again in full swing, reinforcing their near-death genocidal acts in forms that are unimaginable and unconscionable. The mass incarceration of thousands of Tigrayans and the extrajudicial killing of several Tigrayan civilians in almost all cities and towns of Ethiopia has continued with impunity. The arrests and killings include prominent university professors, clergy, children and nursing women.

OMN TV; On the ongoing Amhara Elite Minlik Military Campaign

If you read the history of Atse Minlik, the man was more likely to be from the Oromo than the Amhara. Regardless, the Amhara elite has been claiming Minlik as theirs the same way they claim the glorious Abyssinian/Ethiopian history as theirs only. The same way they stole Tigrayan victories as theirs! Today without respect to the people whom Minlik killed and displaced in mass to expand the dying Ethiopian empire, the Amhara Elites are waging yet another war on the very same people. A military campaign in the name of Minlik is wrong in many ways, but the good thing is this time, they are alone. We know how it will end soon.
